(9-5 overall, 4-1 and tie for first place in Century League in 2008)

The Tillers got all the way to the CIF-Southern Section Southwest Division championship last year, and they could be better this year. Tustin brings back All-County running back Anthony Wilkerson, who compares favorably to former Tillers great DeShaun Foster. Also returning are defensive back Wade Minshew, who likely will get some carries in the Tillers’ double-wing offense, too, as will fullback/defensive back star Denzale Stewart. Tustin has solid linemen again, led by all-league returnees Scott Hungerford and Faitele Faafoi. If Tustin starts 1-3 or even 1-4, ignore it. The Tillers do that every year, and then play their best when it counts the most.

Jeff Bailey, who coached the Golden Hawks to two CIF championships, has departed to launch the football program at new Yorba Linda High. But his replacement, longtime Valencia assistant coach Shawn Racobs, inherits a solid program and a good team. Among the returnees is ’08 all-league first-team running back/defensive back Brook Dunn, second-team all-league receiver/defensive back Chris Manassero, and three returning starters on the offensive line. Tustin looks like the best team in the Century League, but El Dorado will bear watching again.

Among the better returnees is defensive end Josh Seiler, all-league second team last season as a sophomore. The Comanches might not unseat El Dorado for the league championship, but they should be playoff-bound again. In last year’s playoffs, Canyon beat Empire League champion Cypress in the first round and fourth-seeded Fullerton in the second before losing to Tustin in the semifinals.

This week I am picking the Top 5 Series of the Week. Here is one of them:

Brea Olinda (12-10, 7-4) vs. Canyon (13-8, 9-2)Wednesday at Canyon; Friday at Brea Olinda

When:

Outlook: Canyon begins the week with a two-game lead over Brea Olinda in the competitive Century League.

Canyon has a one-game lead over El Dorado, which is playing Villa Park.

Brea Olinda leads Villa Park by one game for third place.

See, how wild things are here.

Canyon is coming off of a two-game sweep of Tustin last week. Shannon Driscoll had seven RBIs in the series.

Brea Olinda split a pair with Villa Park last week both games were low-scoring affairs. Villa Park won Wednesday’s game 4-3 and Brea Olinda responded with a 2-1 victory.

The Wildcats won the first meeting, 8-1, making it that much more important for Canyon to try to sweep, so it can have the tiebreaker.

Will it happen? Or is Brea Olinda about to turn this league upside down?

(All games start at 3:15 p.m. unless noted)
*Records are through May 4

When: Wednesday at Villa Park; Friday at Brea Olinda

Outlook: Brea Olinda enters the week tied with El Dorado for second place in the Century League, one game behind leader Canyon.

Essentially, Brea Olinda is in third, because it lost the season series to El Dorado. However, here comes Villa Park.

The Spartans bounced back after getting swept by Tustin, by sweeping El Modena.

Villa Park now finds itself one-game behind Brea Olinda and El Dorado. The Spartans won the first meeting, 8-2, on March 25.

Shane Fessel leads Villa Park with a .400 batting average. Nolan Hoppie and Daniel Warwick are both 4-2 for the Spartans and Chase Yamashiro is 3-1.

Brea Olinda swept Tustin last week. Tyler Kern leads the Wildcats with a .448 batting average. Hayden Greene (.417) and Trenton Broadsheet (.413) are both having good years.

Travis McGee is 5-3 with a 2.53 ERA for Brea Olinda.

Will Villa Park still be in the race after this week?

(Records as of Jan. 7)

Canyon (9-6) vs. Brea Olinda (8-8)

Friday, 7:30 p.m., at Brea Olinda

Outlook: Call him Kyle. Call him K.C. Just give him the ball.

Caudill, the 7-foot-sophomore, is averaging 16 points and 12 rebounds through the nonleague season.

Now, everybody in the league knows him, so he will probably see his share of double and triple teams. How will he handle that?

Then again, that probably shouldn’t stop him.

In case it does, Brett Kelley (11.8 ppg) get ready. You should get a lot of good looks.

Caudill’s presence alone could give Brea Olinda the nod as league favorite.

Or is it Canyon? The Comanches are getting accustomed to life without Jerime Anderson (UCLA). Anderson, the Register Player of the Year, did a lot last year (22.6 points, 7.8 rebs, 6.0 assists and 5 steals) for the Comanches as they won the Century League title.

Can this group of Comanches find ways to win games?

Canyon has played a tough nonleague schedule going 2-2 against teams who have been ranked in the county’s top 10.

Canyon also finished fifth at the Orange Holiday Classic.

A lot of players earned valuable experience last year, how much will that help them?
