Video: Canyon completes comeback, defeating Villa Park

January 5th, 2011, 2:12 pm by

The Comanches defeated the Spartans 66-59, after Canyon was down as many as 15 points.

Canyon’s Chris Anderson led the way with a season-high 27 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 assists.

“He’s the best player in the county,” said Canyon head coach Nate Harrison. “He’s one of the best players in the state, if not the country. He’s that good.”

Anderson may have played with little more gusto since his older brother, UCLA’s Jerime Anderson cheered him on from behind the Canyon bench.

“It’s great when he comes out and supports me,” said Chris Anderson. “It’s good to see him in the stands. It helps me out.”

Jerime Anderson, a former county player of the year, was impressed with younger brother’s play.

“He just took the game over in the second half,” said Jerime Anderson. “He’s a beast. I love watching him play.”

Canyon outscored Villa Park 36-17 in the second half.

CENTURY LEAGUE

LEAGUE FAVORITE: Foothill: A CIF-Southern Section champion last year and Sea View League champ last year, too, the Knights return plenty of players from that team, like senior guards Rob Filley and Cooper Pickell, to win league another lesgue title.

Football: Century League approves use of OT

October 21st, 2010, 2:33 pm by

The Century League today initiated overtime for its league football games.

It will go by the 25-yard system, as it does across the CIF-Southern Section. Each team gets the ball on the opponent’s 25, with the opposition given the opportunity to equal or exceed the scoring of the team that got the ball first. Each team gets an equal number of possessions.

Welcome to a new Saturday feature at OCVarsity.

Each week, I will take a look back at the week’s action. This week, I can spend the entire rewind on the Trinity League …  In fact, that’s what I might do.

Here is the Calhoun Rewind for Week 2, starting with No. 15.

15. Am I wrong, or is everyone in the fight for the Century League title?

Calhoun’s Top Games of Week 0: Foothill vs. Tustin

Damian Calhoun takes a look at the top games on the Week 0 schedule:

Foothill vs. No. 12 Tustin
Friday, 7 p.m. at Tustin High

Outlook: These two city rivals played a game of musical leagues this year, with Foothill moving from the Sea View to the Century League and Tustin leaving the Century League for the Empire League.

It doesn’t matter, which league they’re in, expect a big crowd for this year’s annual meeting.

O.C. football Top 25: No. 13

August 25th, 2010, 9:01 am by

13. Esperanza
(4-6 overall, 1-4 in the Sunset League last year)

The Aztecs were shifted to the Century League this year, and that’s probably the right fit – the opening of nearby Yorba Linda High drained some of the Esperanza athletic talent pool and perhaps made competing in football in the Sunset League, one of the CIF-Southern Section’s best football groups, too difficult. Esperanza is among the favorites in the Century League, and for good reasons. Running back Mark Manibusan rushed for 650 yards lasty year, linebacker Mason Miller (ranked as one of the county’s top 10 at the position) had six sacks, and safety Nick Catalano had three interceptions.

O.C. football Top 25: No. 19

19. Villa Park
(7-4 overall, 3-2 in the Century League last year)

This team went from 1-9 in 2007, to 4-6 in ’08 and on to last year’s winning record and playoff appearance, the school’s first since 2004.

O.C. football Top 25: No. 23

August 23rd, 2010, 8:56 am by

23. Canyon
(4-6 overall, 2-3 in Century League last year)

The Comanches missed the playoffs last year for the first time since 2004. They have a good group of returnees, with five starters back on offensive and six more on defense, including returning all-league defensive end Josh Seiler and tight end/linebacker Ty Parker. The Century League got a bit larger this year, having grown into a seven-team league that lost Tustin but now includes Esperanza and Foothill; the top four finishers in a seven-team league receive guaranteed playoff berths.
