Girls water polo: Back Bay Splashdown Five, get ready! (poll)

Saturday night’s CIF Division 1 girls water polo final will pit Back Back rivals Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar against each other for the fifth time this season.

I wonder how many rivals in any high school sport in Orange County can say they have played five times in a single season, with the last one for a CIF championship? My guess, not many.

Newport and CdM truly have a unique relationship in girls water polo in that they play their annual Battle of the Bay nonleague game — a must-see match each season — and then enter the same high-powered tournaments.

Here’s a recap of the previous four matches this season – which the teams split (pictured above: NH’s Cleo Harrington, far left, and CdM’s Ally McCormick):

Girls water polo: Orange County places nine players on U.S. youth team

Orange County has placed an impressive nine players on the U.S. women’s youth water polo team bound for the FINA Youth World Championships Dec. 1-9 in Perth, Australia, the U.S. federation announced Monday.

The O.C. players on the 13-player roster include two graduates and one with ties to Golden West College . Here’s the list of the O.C. players, followed by the remaining roster:

Mackenzie Barr, Mater Dei, Sr., center

Carlee Capana, Newport Harbor, So., GK

Makenzie Fisher, Laguna Beach, So., def.

Girls water polo: Corona del Mar’s Papa narrows college list to three

Corona del Mar water polo attacker Cassidy Papa has narrowed her college choices to three, the senior said Saturday at the Battle of the Bay boys match.

The final three are: Stanford, UCLA and USC.

Papa has officially visited Stanford and UCLA, and plans to make an official trip to USC in early November.

Papa also is among several county players in the running to make the U.S. youth that will compete at the FINA world youth championships in Perth, Australia in early December.

Girls water polo: Corona del Mar captures Santa Barbara TOC

SANTA BARBARA Corona del Mar’s girls water polo team didn’t have the strongest starts Saturday at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions.

But no squad finished stronger than the Sea Queens. Diana Murphy and Cassidy Papa each scored three goals to help rally Corona del Mar past Back Bay rival Newport Harbor in the final, 10-8, at Santa Barbara.

The Sea Queens trailed, 4-0, before storming to their third victory against the Lady Sailors in as many tries this winter.

Girls water polo: Fantastic five make U.S. youth team

A few standout girls from Orange County didn’t play over the weekend at the California State High School Water Polo Championships in Orange County.

The players were in Hungary with the U.S. national youth team. The county players on the trip were:

Mater Dei junior-to-be Mackenzie Barr, above, far left

Newport Harbor senior-to-be Maddy McLaren, above middle

Foothill freshman-to-be Christina Manzella

Corona del Mar junior-to-be Cassidy Papa, above, far right
