Another long drive for Cypress

May 25th, 2013, 10:15 am by

Cypress took a lengthy road trip to Oxnard for its CIF-Southern Section Division 2 quarterfinal playoff game, which Cypress won, 9-0.

The Centurions hit the road again for the semifinals. They lost the coin flip that decided the home team for their Division 2 semifinal against Vista Murrieta. Cypress will journey 64 miles to play at Vista Murrieta High on Tuesday.

When two teams meet after the first round of the playoffs, the team with the fewest number of playoff home games at that point of the playoffs is the home team. If the teams have played the same number of playoff home games, a coin flip identifies the home team.

The Division 1 semifinals doubleheader Tuesday at historic and charming Blair Field in Long Beach has Marina playing Loyola of Los Angeles at 4 p.m.  and Los Alamitos playing Harvard-Westlake at 7 p.m. Marina finished in second place and Los Alamitos was third in the Sunset League.

Capistrano Valley Christian is the home team for its Division 6 semifinal against Calvary Chapel of Downey. Capistrano Valley Christian has won its three playoff games by a combined score of 44-5, including an 18-0 road victory over Frazier Mountain of Lebec in the quarterfinals Friday. Calvary Chapel of Downey emerged from the wild-card round to reach the semifinals.

The CIF-SS semifinals schedule for games involving Orange County teams:

Division 1 at Blair Field (Long Beach) — Loyola vs. Marina, 4 p.m.; Los Alamitos vs. Harvard-Westlake, 7 p.m.

Division 2 — Cypress at Vista Murrieta, 3:15 p.m.

Division 6 — Calvary Chapel of Downey at Capistrano Valley Christian, 3:15 p.m.

Baseball playoffs: Trabuco at home for semifinals; Mater Dei at 7 p.m.

May 26th, 2012, 10:19 am by

UPDATED: Trabuco Hills won the coin flip that made the Mustangs the home team for their Division 2 semifinal game against Aliso Niguel.

And, to the surprise of nobody — right? — Mater Dei vs. Newbury Park was selected to be the 7 p.m. game in the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 semifinals Tuesday at Blair Field in Long Beach.

Because Aliso and Trabuco have played the same number of playoff home games, a coin flip was needed to decide the home team for their Division 2 semifinal Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. Aliso Niguel beat Trabuco, two out of three, in their three-game series in the Sea View League.

The Division 1 baseball semifinals for years have been played as a doubleheader at Blair. The 4 p.m. game is the other D1 semi, West Ranch of Valencia vs. Corona. In the quarterfinals Friday, West Ranch beat top-seeded Orange Lutheran and Corona defeated El Dorado.

Given that Mater Dei is so good at attracting a large audience, no matter the sport, it makes financial sense for CIF-SS to place Mater Dei in the late slot.

Tickets for the semifinals doubleheader are $6 for adults and $4 for students with valid student identification and for people 13 and younger. Parking is free, yet sparse, at Blair Field.

In other semifinals Tuesday, all at 3:15 p.m., Beckman is at Alhambra in Division 3, and Capistrano Valley Christian plays St. Margaret’s at San Juan Sports Park in Division 6.

Baseball: Aliso, Mater Dei win coin flips

May 23rd, 2012, 10:44 am by

Aliso Niguel and Mater Dei this morning won coin flips that determined home teams for Friday’s quarterfinals of the CIF-Southern Section playoffs.

Mater Dei will be at home Friday against Esperanza in a Division 1 quarterfinal. Aliso plays host to Valencia in a Division 2 quarterfinal. Valencia scored the biggest upset of the playoffs so far, with its 3-1 victory Tuesday over top-seeded Harvard Westlake, which this week is ranked No. 12 in the nation.

All games are at 3:15 p.m. There could be time changes, for which both teams would have to agree upon and the CIF-SS office would have to approve. If we get time changes, we will post them here.

When two teams meet after the first round of the playoffs, the team with the fewest number of playoff home games at that point of the playoffs is the home team. If the teams have played the same number of playoff home games, a coin flip determines the home team.

For example, in Division 1 Orange Lutheran has played two playoff home games and its quarterfinals opponent, West Ranch of Valencia, has played one. So West Ranch is the home team. Mater Dei and Esperanza both have played one home and one away playoff game, so a coin flip was needed there.

Other county teams that lost coin flips today: El Dorado (Division 1); Oxford Academy (Division 6); and St. Margaret’s (Division 6). In Division 6, Capistrano Valley Christian won its coin flip.

Updated brackets are here at ocvarsity.com.

CVC hires new football coach

May 11th, 2011, 12:10 pm by

Former Tulane assistant head coach Dan Dodd has been hired as Capistrano Valley Christian’s new head football coach and athletic director, the school announced Tuesday.

Dodd, a former San Clemente resident and 1974 San Clemente High graduate, has coached at the high school, junior college and Division I level for 31 years – the last four at Tulane where he served as the Green Wave’s offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, and assistant head coach for three seasons.

Dodd came to TU after nine seasons at the University of New Mexico, where he served as the special team’s coordinator with additional duties of overseeing recruiting, wide receivers and kickers.
