How I voted today in the Orange County baseball top 10 poll. I am one of five voters on the panel. This is not the official top 10 of the week. It is just one of five votes.
1. Mater Dei
2. El Toro
3. Fountain Valley
4. El Dorado
5. Canyon
6. San Clemente
7. Cypress
8. Orange Lutheran
9. Marina
10. Trabuco Hills
I did a live blog from the Century League showdown between bitter rivals Canyon and El Modena on Tuesday at El Modena High. Here’s how it all went down:
LIVE FROM EL MODENA HIGH
I have the Mobile OCVarsity Press Row set up at El Modena for the latest installment of the Canyon-El Modena blood feud.
This has been one of the best rivalries in the county for a long time, but lately the Comanches have been beating up on the Vanguards.
Canyon has won the past five meetings against El Mo, including two this season. El Mo hasn’t beaten since a 7-6 victroy at Canyon on April 19, 2011. Believe me, that does not sit well with El Mo coach Steve Harrington.
Dan Hay’s Comanches had a dismal showing at the Michelle Carew Classic, but they have rebounded with a three-game winning streak.
Canyon (14-9, 6-1) still has Century League title aspirations, while El Mo is (12-10, 3-4) is fighting for its playoff lives. The to three teams in the Century League are guaranteed playoff berths and the fourth place team usually gets an at-large berth in Division 1. Harrington said his teams have never missed the playoffs in his 20-plus years of coaching.
This game is all about “pride.” Can El Mo get some payback or will Canyon continue its domination?
Canyon, are you ready?
El Mo, are you ready?
LET’S GET IT ON!!!!
Canyon’s already got something going in the top of the first.
Sophomore Brianna Betschel bloops a one-out single up the middle and El Modena-transfer Paulina Anasis walks to give the Comanches runners on first and second with one out.
Maddy Neales is throwing for the Vanguards. Neales gets Utah-commit Hailey Hilburn on a called third strike with a pitch on the inside corner of the plate. Two down.
Michigan-bound Taylor Swearingen is one of the top hitters for Canyon, but she has been having an up-and-down season. Let’s see if she can come through with a clutch hit. I wonder how Canyon girls basketball coach Matt Dale missed Swearingen on campus. She’s tall and athletic.
Neales walks Swearingen and … THE BASES ARE JUICED!!! Top of the first and THE BASES ARE ALREADY JUICED!!!
Canyon had won the five previous games over El Modena but not this time. The Vanguards defeated the Comanches 4-2.
Interviews with Madelyn Neales, Victoria Zamora, and Steve Harrington.

I did a live blog for the Century League showdown between No. 4 Esperanza and No. 5 Canyon on Tuesday at Esperanza High. Here’s how it all went down:
LIVE FROM ESPERANZA HIGH
I have set up the Mobile OCVarsity Press Row at Esperanza High today where the Aztecs will play host to Canyon in a big Century League showdown.
Both of these teams are playing very well right now. The Comanches, ranked No. 5 in the county and No. 16 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports, are 9-3 overall and 2-0 in league. Esperanza, ranked No. 4 in the county and No. 8 in the state, is 10-1 and 1-0 in league.
Esperanza had a big week last week with a league victory over El Modena and victories over Tesoro and Ocean View to take the Timberwolf Classic title. Canyon whacked its bitter rival El Modena last week.
Both these teams have fine pitching. South Carolina-commit Hayley “The Matrix” Copeland will be in the circle for the Aztecs and Utah-commit Hailey Hilburn is throwing for the Comanches. Esperanza third baseman Brynley Steele is red hot and is this week’s reigning OCVarsity player of the week.

The first top 10 vote of the season is difficult in any sport, but especially so for baseball. Teams beat better teams because the better team went with its No. 4 starting pitcher, or brought up a JV guy who won’t pitch in a varsity league game, etc.
But here it goes — first top 10 vote of this baseball season …
