Football: Preparations for O.C. All-Star Game begin Monday

The North and South all-star football teams will begin practice Monday for the 50th Annual Brea Lions Club Orange County All-Star Game, July 10 at Orange Coast College.

Both teams are scheduled to have eight practices.

The North squad, coached by Los Alamitos' John Barnes, will practice at Los Alamitos, from 6-8 p.m.

His son, Brian will lead the South. Practices will take place at Tesoro High, from 6-8:30 p.m.

This will be the second head-to-head meeting between father and son. Brian Barnes and Tesoro defeated Los Alamitos, 23-7 in the first round of the Pac-5 playoffs.

Tickets for the all-star game will be available at the practices.

The North won last year's meeting, 12-10.

Father and son are going to face off again.

Los Alamitos' John Barnes and his son, Brian Barnes of Tesoro, have been selected as the coaches for the 50th Brea Lions Orange County North-South Prep All-Star Football Game on July 10 at Orange Coast College.

The announcement was made Monday night at the National Football Foundation's scholar-athlete awards banquet in Anaheim.

In the fall, Brian Barnes' Titans defeated John Barnes' Griffins, 23-7, in the first round of the Pac-5 Division playoffs. Tesoro went onto reach the Pac-5 Division finals. Brian Barnes was selected The Register's coach of the year.

This will be John Barnes' third time coaching in the game. He guided the North to a 17-17 in 1989 and an 18-13 victory in 2005.

Tesoro football coach Brian Barnes has been selected the KABC/7 Sports high school football coach of the year for Southern California.

Past winners of the award include Dave White of Edison, Jerry Jaso of Long Beach Poly, Steve Grady of Loyola and Marijon Ancich of St. Paul.

Barnes received the award Wednesday in an on-campus presentation. ""It was a really cool thing," Barnes said in a text message Thursday. "There were a lot of fans there."

Barnes said ABC/7 will cover the award on Saturday night.
