My answer is a resounding, yes. Tesoro’s stunning, 24-20, victory against two-time defending Pac-5 Division champion Servite is the upset of the year in Orange County football and one of biggest upsets I can recall in recent memory.
“It might be the biggest win in (our) school history,” Tesoro coach Brian Barnes said in a phone interview afterward.
The Titans were a third-place team from the rugged South Coast League who had been inconsistent at times.
This is a team that was blown out by Santa Margarita in the “Rumble at the Ranch” early in the season but impressed me a few weeks later when it beat a super-athletic Narbonne. The Titans promptly fell to Chaparral in their next game.
And after Tesoro almost upset Mission Viejo in an emotional game, they got blown out again by San Clemente.
