Football recruiting: Gudim commits, Tesoro assembles monster class

Tesoro All-County defensive back Brett Gudim has committed to Air Force. Gudim's Division I-A commitment is one of the great final touches on an outstanding class for Orange County's top-ranked team of 2009. Here's the breakdown for the Titans, who have seven college recruits:

Adam Albitar, RB/S, committed to Cornell

Josh Cabral, OG, committed to Navy

John Michael Davis, LB, signed with Boise St.

Evan Finkenberg, OL, signed with Arizona St.

Brett Gudim, commited to Air Force

Preston King, Ath., signed with San Diego St.

Robbie Picazo, preferred walkon at Stanford

All-County defensive back Brett Gudim of Tesoro has been offered by Air Force and will visit the academy this weekend.

The senior said the Falcons are recruiting him as a wide receiver and safety.

Gudim also is interested in the University of San Diego, a Division I-AA school. It appears the feeling is mutual. San Diego had two coaches attend Tesoro's basketball game against San Clemente on Thursday night.

On Wednesday night, Air Force made an in-home visit with Gudim.

Yes, it sounds like a pretty good recruiting battle: Air Force vs. San Diego.

Air Force seemed to really want Servite's Bijon Samoodi but lost the All-County defensive back to Cal Poly SLO.

Will the Falcons land Gudim instead?

Outlook: Is there a team that needs a victory more than the Cougars? Capo, which was ranked fourth in the county’s preseason poll, has hit a rough patch, losing four consecutive games (Orange Lutheran, Servite, Huntington Beach and Dana Hills).

What gives? Is it the shorts?

Now they have to face the rival Titans, who are led by last year’s league MVP, Chris Manresa (San Diego), and the band of football players turned hoopsters (Brett Gudim, Cody Wittick and Robbie Picazo).

The Titans are seven points away from being undefeated. They lost to Sonora by six and Mayfair by one.

Tesoro lost both meetings to Capistrano Valley last season (62-57 and 59-56). Is this game destined to be another close one?
