Lacrosse: Santa Margarita and Los Al girls, Foothill and St. Margaret’s boys advance

Division I girls  semifinal (final)

Santa Margarita 12, Foothill 10

Los Alamitos 19, Beckman 13

Santa Margarita and Los Alamitos will play Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Mission Viejo in the Division 1 South finals.

Division 1 boys semifinal (final):

Foothill 12, San Clemente 6

St. Margaret’s 7, El Toro 6 (FINAL, 2nd OT) Kent Iizuka scores the game winner for the Tartans, who go to the title game for the first time since 2008.

Foothill and St. Margaret’s will play Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Mission Viejo in the Division 1 South finals.

Division 2 semifinals:

GIRLS
Capistrano Valley 9, Mater Dei:  Ally Hadley four goals for Capo Valley and Jackie Moffitt and Riley Eggeman two goals.

Capo Valley will play St. Margaret’s Thursday at 5 p.m. in the Division 2 final at Aliso Niguel.

St. Margaret’s 10, Aliso Niguel 9

BOYS

Dana Hills 8, Great Oak 1

Mission Viejo 13, El Dorado 8

Lacrosse: Schedule revised for Saturday’s semifinal playoffs

The schedule  for Saturday’s U.S. Lacrosse South playoffs has been revised on the girls side while the boys schedule remains the same, according to Dan Perry, chairman of the U.S. Lacrosse playoff committee.

Girls Division 1 semifinals at Aliso Niguel:

Santa Margarita vs. Foothill, 1:30 p.m.

Beckman vs. Los Alamitos, 5:30 p.m.

Girls Division 2 semifinals at Aliso Niguel:

Mater Dei vs. Capistrano Valley, 11:30 a.m.

Lacrosse: Thursday’s second round boys and girls playoff schedule

The second round of the U.S. Lacrosse Division 1 South playoffs will be held on Thursday for boys and girls.

The semifinals are Saturday at San Clemente for the boys and Saturday at Aliso Niguel for the girls division.

Thursday’s Division 1 South boys second round:

No. 8 Los Alamitos at No. 1 Foothill, 3:45 p.m.

No. 5 Corona del Mar at No. 4 San Clemente, 7 p.m.

No. 11 Santa Margarita at No. 3 El Toro, 5:15 p.m.

No. 7 Huntington Beach at No. 2 St. Margaret’s, 4:30 p.m.

Thursday’s Division 1 South girls second round:

No. 9 Corona del Mar at No. 1 Foothill, 5:45 p.m.

No. 5 Santa Margarita at No. 4 El Toro, 5 p.m.

No. 6 Mission Viejo vs. No. 3 Beckman at Hicks Canyon Park in Irvine, 4:30 p.m.

No. 7 Tesoro at No. 2 Los Alamitos, time TBA.

The opening round of the playoffs was on Tuesday.

Here are the results of the opening round of the U.S. Lacrosse playoffs

Boys Division 1, South Division:

No. 8 Los Alamitos 12, No. 9 Mater Dei 5

No. 5 Corona del Mar 13, No. 12 Newport Harbor 9

No. 11 Santa Margarita 6, No. 6 Tesoro 5

No. 7 Huntington Beach 10, No. 10 JSerra 6

Girls Division 1 South:

No. 9 Corona del Mar 14, No. 8 Trabuco Hills 10

No. 5 Santa Margarita 16, No. 12 El Dorado 8

No. 6 Mission Viejo 10, No. 11 Newport Harbor 7

No. 7 Tesoro 15, No. 10 Laguna Hills 13

Highlights:

Corona del Mar 13, Newport Harbor 9 (boys): CdM, the fifth seed, was led by junior  Michael Keasey with 3 goals and 1 assist, junior  Connor Canale, 3 goals; and junior  Hunter Molnar with 2 goals and 1 assist.

The defense  was led by senior  Donald Dalton who also had 1 assist and senior  John Prickett.  Junior Michael Ortlieb had 17 saves.

The Sea Kings move on to face No. 4 San Clemente Thursday at 7 p.m. at San Clemente.

Newport Harbor, the No. 12 seed, was coached by Mark Todd, former coach at Corona del Mar.

Jake Turner led Newport Harbor with six goals. Dewey Wilson had one save and nine loose balls and Zac Vavda had 11 saves. Riley Robinson had one goal and two assists.

Huntington Beach 10,  JSerra 6 (boys): The Oilers (15-2) were led by Steven Koressel, who scored four goals. Jake Lucier scored three goals to lead JSerra (10-7). JSerra moves on to meet No. 2 St. Margaret’s Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at St. Margaret’s.

Boys lacrosse: Foothill top seed for Division 1 South playoffs beginning Tuesday

Pairings for the U.S. Lacrosse Boys Division I South playoffs have been announced by Dan Perry, chairman of U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section Championships.

“More than 20 coaches and US Lacrosse Chapter board members were involved in the seeding meetings,” Perry wrote in an email to coaches late Saturday night. It was a long five-hour process but we feel that every team that deserved to be in the playoffs was duly considered and selected.”

Foothill, which is going for its fifth  straight county and Southern California title, is seeded first. St. Margaret’s is seeded No. 2, El Toro No. 3 and San Clemente No. 4. Those teams will all have byes in the opening round and play in the second round on Thursday.

Division I opening round match-ups:

No. 9 Mater Dei at No. 8 Los Alamitos (McAuliffe School), 5 p.m.,  with the winner playing at Foothill Thursday at 3:45 p.m.

No. 12 Newport Harbor at No. 5 Corona del Mar, 4 p.m.,  with the winner playing at San Clemente Thursday at 7 p.m.

No. 11 Santa Margarita at No. 6 Tesoro at 4 p.m. with the winner playing at El Toro Thursday at 5:15 p.m.

Lacrosse: Boys and girls playoff pairings to be announced this weekend

Pairings for the opening round of the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Division playoffs will be announced Sunday, according to Dan Perry of U.S. Lacrosse.

Ocvarsity.com will publish the pairings shortly after they are released.

Twenty teams will be selected with the first 12 going into Division 1 and the next eight going into Division 2 for both boys and girls levels.

Opening round match-ups will be on Tuesday for Division 1 and will be played at the home field of the higher seeded squad. Read the rest of this entry »

Boys lacrosse: CdM’s Dalton signs letter to play for Drexel University

Corona del Mar senior  Donald Dalton has signed a letter of intent to play for  Drexel University in Philadelphia, Coach G.W. Mix said Monday night.

Drexel, an NCAA Division I program, competes in the Colonial Athletic League.

Dalton, who plays defense, has been a three-year starter for the Sea Kings and has also been a standout football player. He will focus on lacrosse in college. Read the rest of this entry »

Boys lacrosse: Mater Dei’s Dylan Acevedo signs with Dominican University

Mater Dei midfielder Dylan Acevedo signed a national letter of intent today to play for Dominican University.

Acevedo leads Mater Dei with 20 goals and 20 assists.

“I commend Dylan on his hard work and dedication to the Mater Dei lacrosse program the past four years,” said Coach Matt Goto. “It is this hard work and dedication on and off the field that have helped him succeed in lacrosse. I wish him the best of luck at Dominican University, where I know he will do well.”

Acevedo led Mater Dei to the Orange County Division II South title last year,  scoring 35 goals and notching 34 assists to earn all county honors. He also had 109 groundballs and earned All-Trinity League honors for the Monarchs.

Some lacrosse athletes in the county announced their future plans in November.

But we expect a number in the county will be announcing their choices for college Wednesday during the National Letter of Intent signing day.
