We're going to exit the voting with two fans winners from the boys and two from the girls.

One reason is that we clearly had some voting irregularities over the final two days, so much so that the voting no longer seemed all that valid. We were going with an honor system, but there clearly was stuffing of the online ballot boxes happening.

The other reason is that we simply have four outstanding finalists who deserve recognition from the fans, so why not recognize all of them?

Therefore, your choices for the OCVarsity athletes of the year are (in alphabetical order):

Robert Refsnyder, Laguna Hills football and baseball
Cindy Tran, Edison swimming
Cecil Whiteside, Newport Harbor football and track and field
Mary-Rachel Walsh, St. Margaret's tennis, soccer and lacrosse

All four will be invited to attend our annual dinner to honor Orange County's athletes of the year in each sport.

The dinner also is where we will announce the Register's choices as the county's overall and small schools athletes of the year. The Register's picks could be the same as the fans' and the OCADA or drastically different (please note, we won't finalize the selections until after the upcoming weekend of championships).

Thanks to all who passionately supported their favorites, even if the passion occasionally was a little over the top.

One played basketball and ran track this season, even though he has a Division I football scholarship locked up. Another is on his way to Arizona on a baseball scholarship. And two of the semifinalists are among the top track and field athletes in the county.

All four are great choices, but now you have to cast your votes to help pick the finalists.

Semifinal voting will end Friday at 8 a.m., and voting for the finals will begin Saturday.

Now it's time for the second-round voting to determine the fans' choice as the OCVarsity boys athlete of the year.

You'll notice quickly that there's a strong football representation among the eight quarterfinalists ... only one of the eight is not a football player. But he's state champion wrestler and he edged Orange County's football offensive player of the year in first-round voting.

This should be interesting.
