Ironic twist to the Tesoro selection

November 4th, 2012, 8:56 am by

The CIF-Southern Section’s Football Coaches Advisory Committee ranked the leagues in the Pac-5 Division, as to does in all 13 11-man playoff divisions.

It had the South Coast ranked ahead of the Serra League, and that ranking played a part in Tesoro’s selection over Crespi for one of the Pac-5′s two at-large berths.

Brian Barnes was one of the 45 coaches on the advisory committee. It became a 44-coach committee when Barnes was removed last week as Tesoro’s coach. So the sans-Barnes committee’s ranking of the the leagues helped Tesoro get the at-large berth.

Where, when:
Cerritos College, Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Outlook: These schools were league rivals for many years but have not played each other since 2005 when Servite beat Amat in a Serra League that was crucial to the Friars’ first league championship under then-new coach Troy Thomas. New assistant commissioner at CIF-SS

July 29th, 2011, 12:38 pm by

Glenn Martinez, most recently a vice principal at Charter Oak of Covina, is the new assistant commissioner in charge of football, wrestling and baseball at the CIF-Southern Section office. He replaces Rob Wigod, who was promoted to commissioner upon the retirement of Jim Staunton.

Martinez is best known as the very successful baseball coach at Bishop Amat of La Puente.

For the CIF-SS release on the hiring of Martinez, click here.

It was a position for which many top-shelf athletic persons applied. A very-rumored name in the mix was Servite’s highly-regarded athletic director/wrestling coach Alan Clinton. Upon our most-recent conversation with him, Clinton said he had  not inquired about the CIF-SS assistant commissioner post.
