Quarterback Johnny Stanton ran for two touchdowns and passed for four more to tie a state bowl record as Santa Margarita defeated Bellarmine, 42-37, in the CIF State Division 1 state bowl game Friday at the Home Depot Center.

Is The Pope picking Santa Margarita or Bellarmine?
Santa Margarita triumphed over San Clemente, 27-13, in the CIF-SS Pac-5 Division championship game on Dec. 10 at Angel Stadium. In the aftermath of South County Football Armageddon, the Eagles earned a spot in the CIF Division 1 State championship bowl game where they will meet another Catholic school powerhouse in Bellarmine of San Jose tonight at 8 at The Home Depot Center in Carson.
You know what that means? That’s right, El Jefe Todd Harmonson has turned the live updates over to me for one more week. Get ready for State Championship Football Madness.
When two mighty Catholic schools meet on the gridiron, I always wonder which side The Lord will be on. I have a guy at The Vatican and he has no inside dope on who The Pope is picking in this matchup between Santa Margarita and Bellarmine.
Football: Santa Margarita earns CIF State bowl berth

The football season will continue for the Santa Margarita Eagles
Santa Margarita, who won the CIF-SS Pac-5 title Saturday night, will face Bellarmine Prep of San Jose in the CIF State Division I bowl game, Friday at 8 p.m. at The Home Depot Center.
The announcement was made Sunday.
Santa Margarita defeated San Clemente, 27-13 in the Pac-5 final Saturday night at Angel Stadium. That was the first title for the Eagles since 1997.
“I’m as happy as a football coach can be,” Santa Margarita coach Harry Welch said. “I said all along that I would accept and respect whatever way the decision went … and I accept this happily.”
