Softball: Tesoro vs. Beckman Live Blog Remix

March 5th, 2013, 8:54 pm by

I did a live blog from the Beckman-Tesoro game on Tuesday afternoon. Here’s how it all went down:

LIVE FROM LOWER PETERS CANYON PARK

IT’S TIIIIIIIIME!!!!

It’s softball season, so it’s time bring back the live blogs. I’m at Lower Peters Canyon Park, the home field for Beckman, to cover the Patriots against Tesoro in a nonleague game.

Beckman ace Kira Griswold is off to a hot start for the Patriots. Griswold, a junior who has committed to Colgate, is 2-0 with 0.00 ERA. She no-hit Aliso Niguel last week. Aliso has a bunch of good hitters, so that’s saying something.

Beckman also has UMass-bound Cote Clark, who is the only senior on the team. Coach Glen Fisher is excited about his young team.

Tesoro is led by Harding-bound Megan Gipe, Michigan-bound Amanda Vargas and Oklahoma-bound Lea Wodach.

Stay tuned for all the updates.

OCVARSITY UNIVERSE CHALLENGE, GAME ON

OK, I’m putting a challenge out to the OCVarsity Universe. I challenge you to listen to Bruno Mars’ “Locked Out of Heaven” and not have that song stuck in your head for the rest of the day. And then you won’t be able to stop comparing Bruno Mars to Sting. BTW, I love that Sting’s name is a verb.

I guess by now you can tell my mind is wondering. The umps haven’t arrived, yet, so I’m left left to my own devices and that translates into OCVarsity Universe Challenges.

Hold up … The umps are here. Game on!

This will be my first look at Beckman ace Kira Griswold. Tesoro has some very good hitters. This should be good.

Tesoro seems fired up. The Titans just did the teenage-girl equivalent of the Haka. Most amusing.

Griswold comes out firing. She struck out Megan Gipe and got Rachel Phillips on a called third strike.

Michigan-bound Amanda Vargas is taking her hacks and she goes down swinging. The Colgate-commit strikes out the side in the top of the first.

Let’s see how Gipe handles Beckman’s hitters. Gipe with a 1-2-3 inning, including two Ks.

Beckman 0, Tesoro 0 at the end of one inning.

Maddie Roth just crushed a solo shot to give Esperanza a 1-0 lead over Rosary in the bottom of the second.

BTW, if you are at a game, hit me with some updates on Twitter @LosOcVarsity and I’ll get them in the live blog.

I don’t know if Kira Griswold is related to Clark Griswold.

GRISWOLD IS FEELING IT

Let’s see if Tesoro can make some contact off Beckman ace Kira Griswold in the top of the second.

OK, there’s some contact. Iowa State-bound Rachel Hartman gets a hold of one. Back, back, back … but it stays on the reservation. One down.

Oklahoma-commit Lea Wodach goes quietly on a called third strike.

Kalee Smith goes down swinging. Griswold has five strikeouts through two innings.

Griswold leads off the bottom of the second with a single and then gets gunned down by Hartman, the catcher, at first. One down.

Emma Willenborg strokes a single to left. Lindsay Carpenter moves her over with a ground out.

D’Oh! E-4. Fortunately, Tesoro SS Amanda Vargas is backing her up and she guns down Willenborg at the plate.

Beckman 0, Tesoro 0 after two innings.

WE NEED BATS?

Beckman ace Kira Griswold is throwing some filthy stuff. She has retired all nine batters she has faced through three innings and she has seven strikeouts.

Tesoro didn’t really need to bring the bat bags the way this is going.

Let’s see if the Patriots can generate any offense in the bottom of the third.

Beckman 0, Tesoro 0 after three innings.

Two-run bomb for Rosary and the Royals take a 3-2 lead on Esperanza.

Tesoro ace Megan Gipe with a 1-2-3 inning to retire the Pats.

MY SPIDEY SENSE IS TINGLING

My Spidey senses are starting to tingle. I’m sensing something is about to happen or Beckman ace Kira Griswold will continue striking everybody out.

Here comes the top of the order for Tesoro.

Megan Gipe takes a called third strike and Rachel Phillips goes down swinging. Two down.

Michigan-bound Amanda Vargas steps to the plate for her second look at Griswold. Vargas can mash. She line drives one right at the second baseman.

That’s another 1-2-3 inning for Griswold.

My Spidey sense is still tingling … or maybe I’m just cold. It’s freezing. Hey, I’m born and raised in So Cal.

Tesoro second baseman Ali Sharon just made an outstanding defensive play.

Gipe with a 1-2-3 inning to retire the Pats. So much for my Spidey sense.

Beckman 0, Tesoro 0 after four innings.

Rosary with another bomb and the Royals lead Esperanza, 4-2, in the top of the fifth.

GRISWOLD ON FIRE AT THE FROZEN TUNDRA

It’s 59 freaking degrees here on the Frozen Tundra at Lambeau Field, err at Lower Peters Canyon Park. Anything below 68 degrees is indoor weather.

Patriots ace Kira Griswold with another 1-2-3 inning, including two strikeouts. K.G. has 11 strikeouts through five innings.

Emma Willenborg leads off the bottom of the fifth with her second single of the game. She stroked it right up the middle.

Lindsay Carpenter mashes one to center field, but she hit it so hard the CF gets the lead runner at second base. One down.

Marissa Frausto hits a nubber down the third-base line, Tesoro’s 3B gets there and makes a good throw to first … E-3!!! The Pats have runners on second and third with one down.

Lia Hanson walks and … wait for it … here it comes … THE BASES ARE JUICED!!! My first juiced situation for the 2013 live blog campaign.

Megan Gipe strikes out Rosario Clark. Two down and … THE BASES ARE STILL JUICED!!!!

Slow roller to short and Amanda Vargas gobbles it up and makes the play at first.

Beckman 0, Tesoro 0 after five innings.

I BELIEVE THAT WE WILL …

Tesoro has made so little contact off Beckman ace Kira Griswold that the Titan bench lost their minds cheering for Dani Steffo’s line drive that went foul.

The Titan bench gets the “I believe” chant going as Steffo strikes out. I believe they got to “I believe that we” before the strikeout. The Titans seem like a fun bunch.

Another foul tip by Ali Sharon and pandemonium breaks out on the Titans bench. Sharon strikes out. Two down.

Griswold strikes out the side in the top of the sixth and now there are a bunch of “Woooooos” from the Patriots. Griswold has 14 K’s through six innings.

Megan Gipe with a 1-2-3 inning to retire the Pats.

Beckman 0, Tesoro 0 after six innings.

Esperanza rallies from a 2-run deficit to take a 5-4 lead over Rosary in the bottom of the fifth.

RIC FLAIR IS A TITAN; WHAT A FINISH!!!!

We have come to the country portion of the Beckman playlist between innings. I feel very patriotic right now.

I believe legendary pro wrestler Ric Flair is on the Titan bench because I hear a lot of “Woooooooooos.”

Here comes the top of the order for the Titans. This is Beckman ace Kira Griswold’s third time through Tesoro’s lineup.

Full count to Rachel Phillips and that draws another “Woooooooo!” from the Titan bench. Phillips grounds out to second. Good hustle play by Tesoro 2B Emma Willenborg. Two down.

Michigan-bound Amanda Vargas crushes one deep to right field … it could go … Beckman RF Rosario Clark backs up to the fence and hauls it in.

Beckman has its 5, 6 and 7 hitters coming up in the bottom of the seventh.

I know it’s 0-0, but this has been an exciting game.

Whoa! Emma Willenborg rips one to the gap in right-center field and she is off to the races. Willenborg ends up with a triple, sliding under the perfect relay throw of Vargas. Willenborg is 3 for 3 on the day.

Now, the Patriots break out into the “I believe that we will win” chant. I believe … I believe that it … I BELIEVE THAT IT IS COLD!!!! I BELIEVE THAT IT IS COLD!!!! I BELIEVE THAT IT IS COLD!!!! I BELIEVE THAT IT IS COLD!!!! I BELIEVE THAT IT IS COLD!!!!

Lindsay Carpenter draws a walk. The Pats have runner son first and third with no outs.

Marissa Frausto grounds out to second and Tesoro is able to hold Willenborg at third. One down. Runners on second and third.

I BELIEVE THAT IT IS COLD!!!! I BELIEVE THAT IT IS COLD!!!! I BELIEVE THAT IT IS COLD!!!!

Lia Hanson draws a walk and … THE BASES ARE JUICED!!!

No. 9 hitter Rosario Clark draws a walk to force in the winning run. Beackman defeats Tesoro, 1-0. What a game.

Kira Griswold strikes out 15 and finishes with a perfect game. K.G. tossed a no-hitter to beat Aliso Niguel last week.

Esperanza rallied for nine runs in the final two innings to beat Rosary, 11-4.

Beckman — at-large team in Southern Division?

November 3rd, 2012, 2:29 pm by

Beckman is the No. 4 team in the Pacific Coast League. The Patriots and Irvine both have 2-3 league records, but because Beckman beat Irvine, Beckman is the league’s No. 4 playoff representative in the Southern Division.

The league’s order of representation for the playoffs: 1. Corona del Mar, 2. Northwood, 3. Woodbridge, 4. Beckman.

As the Pacific Coast League is the best league in the Southern Division, Beckman has a very good chance of getting the division’s one at-large berth when at-large teams are named Sunday at 8 a.m.

Football: Northwood captures the Dennis Toohey Fence Post Trophy

November 2nd, 2012, 11:14 pm by

Northwood’s football team will take home the Dennis Toohey Fence Post Trophy, which goes to the top football team in Irvine.

The Timberwolves stayed alive in the Fence Post race by defeating University, 42-28, Thursday night in a Pacific Coast League game.

But Northwood had to wait for the final outcome of Friday’s Woodbridge-Irvine game. Woodbridge defeated Irvine, 35-7, Friday night at Irvine High to clinch a playoff berth.

Northwood wins the Fence Post because it defeated Woodbridge. Irvine could have won the Fence Post by winning Friday night.

Northwood Coach Rick Curtis and Athletic Director Dean Toohey accepted the trophy after the game. Most of the Northwood players were attending a homecoming dance. Curtis said he plans to present the trophy to his players at school next week.

Northwood is advancing to the CIF-Southern Division playoffs as the No. 2 team behind league champion Corona del Mar. Woodbridge goes as the No. 3 team and Beckman could advance as an at-large entry.

Beckman won the Fence Post last year. Northwood won it in 2010.

Football: Former Rams coaching at Canyon

June 7th, 2012, 4:16 pm by

Ex-Rams LeRoy Irvin and Lucious Smith have been added to the Canyon football coaching staff. Smith is the strength and speed coach, and Irvin will work with defensive backs.

Irvin was a Pro Bowl cornerback with the Rams. Smith, who played at Cal State Fullerton, also was a corner in the NFL.

Also, former Beckman head coach Fred Shambaugh is Canyon’s defensive coordinator. Shambaugh was Beckman’s coach when the Patriots lost in the final minute to Garden Grove in the 2010 CIF-Southern Section Southern Division championship game — a game that will forever be known as “The Josh Webb Game.”
