Sunny Hills baseball coach Marc Patino has resigned, according to athletic director Craig Weinreich, creating a walk-on coaching position. All interested applicants should call 714-626-4307.

Baseball playoffs: Calhoun's random thoughts on the week

The first week of the CIF playoffs has come and gone.

Here are my thoughts on what went down.

** Has the wild-card round ended yet?

** I'm going to predict that Orange Lutheran's Bobby Wheatley will get his name thrown into the hat when the Register is looking for its county athlete of the year for 2010.

** The same goes for Canyon's Phil Ferragamo.

** Memo to college coaches: Keep an eye on Joey Boney of Canyon. He is headed to Cypress College next season, but if you need a sparkplug who isn't afraid to get his uniform dirty, he might be your guy.

** How good is Orange Lutheran going to be next season? I think the answer is scary good.

** Capistrano Valley's Tyler Matzek threw 39 pitches Friday and made it through four innings against Long Beach Wilson. How is that possible?

** And how do you approach playing against Matzek? Do you try to wait him out? Or do you try to be aggressive and swing early in the count? I think either way, you might end up getting a no-hitter tossed at you.

** Laguna Hills' Robert Refsnyder hit three home runs this week to give him 13 for the season. I think there will be a spot for him on the All-County team.

** By now, you've all seen Fryer's prediction for the final four in Division I: Mater Dei, Edison, Capistrano Valley and JSerra. Well, here's mine: Norco, Edison, Marina, JSerra. How does that sound?

Stay tuned next week, for a new final four (just in case).

Baseball playoffs: Orange Lutheran holds on vs. Canyon

Dillon Bryant's sliding catch with the bases loaded in the seventh preserved a 3-1 victory for Orange Lutheran over Canyon in a CIF-SS Division I first-round game Friday.

Canyon had loaded the bases with two outs in the inning against Orange Lutheran starter Bobby Wheatley.

Wheatley was replaced by Andrew Thurman who got Alex Najera to fly out to end the game.

Orange Lutheran took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning thanks a two-run single by Willie Shaw.

Phil Ferragamo got the loss for Canyon.

Orange Lutheran will face Capistrano Valley in a second round game Tuesday.

Trinity League champ JSerra holds onto the No. 2 ranking in the final CIF-SS Division I poll.

Capistrano Valley and Mater Dei both jumped up one spot. Marina fell out after getting swept by Esperanza, while Tesoro moved back in after sweeping Dana Hills. Edison stays at No. 5
