The 2009 Kiwanis/PlyoCity High School All-Star Basketball Games will be played May 9 at Mission Viejo High.

Fryer's analysis: Everything going right for Ocean View

Everything is going right, and at the right time of the season, for Ocean View's boys basketball team.

The Seahawks put together two complete games the past couple of days in these CIF Southern California Regionals, against Canyon in the semifinals Thursday and against Harvard-Westlake of North Hollywood in the Division III final on Saturday, to advance to the CIF State Championships.

Ocean View will play Sacred Heart Cathedral of San Francisco next Saturday in the Division III final at 2:45 p.m. at Arco Arena in Sacramento.

Defense. Ocean View's calling card is its man-to-man defense. At its best, that defense has extended well past the 3-point arc, denying passes to the wings. And this defense never seems to give up clean offensive rebounds.

Shooting. The quickest release in the county might belong to Avery Johnson. Nobody catches-sets-launches a 3-point shot faster than Johnson. Mason Jones just moves around the arc, finding an area the furthest from the defense, and waits for Billy Keller or Anthony Brown or Johnson to pop the ball outside to him, where he calmly puts it up and very often makes it.

Teamwork. When you beat a press, there should be little or no dribbling. Against Harvard-Westlake's constant press, the Seahawks beat it with quick passing to cutters. They found those seams and gaps, and got the ball to their teammates. Many times Saturday, a quick sequence of passes, without a single dribble, led to an easy layup. That not only scores points, but it takes the confidence out of the opposition, which comes to the realization its pressure tactics will not work.

Coaching. Jim Harris and staff, co-head coach (and son) Jimmy Johnson, Tim Walsh and Dan Johnson don't over coach. Too many younger coaches are shouting all game along, adjusting players here or there on defense, barking out new offensive sets on every other possession. That's what practice is for. The Seahawks did all their preparation at practice, so the coaches let them play.
