Swim: Capo Valley's DesCombes announces college pick

Capistrano Valley All-County swimmer and Aquazot club member Jack DesCombes has committed to Stanford, Cougars coach Steve Yancey reports.

As a junior, DesCombes placed third in the 100-yard free (20.90 seconds) and second in the 50 free (44.92) at the CIF-SS Division 1 finals to help lead the Cougars to the team title.

He also split an eye-popping 19.86 anchor for the winning 200-yard free relay.

DesCombes is a great get for the Cardinal. He’s clutch on the relays and continues to progress in his individual events.

Swim: Two Aquazot/Corona del Mar swimmers commit

Corona del Mar swimmers and Aquazot club members Brynne Wong and Christian Garkani have made college commitments, Aquazot coaches Todd Hickman and Brian Pajer said Thursday.

Wong has committed to Texas while Garkani has committed to Louisville.

Swim: University’s Okubo grabs silver at Junior Pan Pacs

University and Aquazot swimmer Corey Okubo took second in the 200-meter butterfly at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Hawaii on Thursday.

Okubo touched in 1 minute, 58.58 seconds, about a second behind winner Kenta Hirai of Japan, who stopped the clock in a meet-record 1:57.40.

Okubo was consistent on Day 1 of the meet. In the prelims, the University junior clocked a 1:58.69.

Swim: Corona del Mar’s Brynne Wong qualifies for Olympic Trials

Add Corona del Mar and Aquazot club swimmer Brynne Wong to the lengthy and impressive list of O.C. competitors who have qualified for the upcoming U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb.

The Sea Queens’ junior qualified in the 100-meter butterfly by clocking a winning time of 1 minute, 1.79 seconds in a FAST-hosted meet over the weekend. The Trials’ standard is 1:01.99.

Aquazot coach Brian Pajer said the Fullerton meet provided Wong a final chance to qualify for Trials. “Sometimes, that’s the charm,” he said.

Wong finished third in the 50-yard free (23.66) and second in the butterfly (54.38) at the CIF-SS Division 1 finals last month.

She trains with Coach Todd Hickman with Aquazot.

Swim: Former Woodbridge standout makes sixth consecutive Olympic team

Former Woodbridge standout swimmer Derya Buyukuncu qualified Saturday night to represent his native Turkey in a sixth consecutive Summer Olympics.

Buyukuncu, 35, qualified in the 200-meter backstroke to highlight county performances on Day 2 of the Speedo Grand Challenge in Irvine.

University sophomore Corey Okubo of the Aquazot placed second in the 400 individual medley in 4:26.06.

Former Register swimmer of the Jon Daniec of the Nadadores took the men’s 400 free in 3:58.59.

Villa Park product Lyndsay DePaul raced the finals of the 400 IM and 100 fly back-to-back.

Swim: University’s Rankin, Okubo claim bronze at juniors

University swimmers Megan Rankin and Corey Okubo each posted a pair of third-place finishes Wednesday at the NCSA Junior National Championships, a major club meet in Orlando.

Okubo, a rising sophomore with the Aquazot club, touched third in the 200-meter butterfly in 2 minutes, 2.04 seconds — about two seconds under the U.S. Olympic Trials standard.

Rankin, a UCLA-bound senior now with the Golden West club, placed third in the women’s 200 butterfly in 2:15.48, also under the U.S. Olympic Trials standard.

The meet races short-course yards in the morning preliminaries and long-course meets in the evening finals.

Swimming: Edison’s Josh Smith commits to UC Santa Barbara

Edison and Aquazot club swimmer Josh Smith has committed to UC Santa Barbara, his father, Brad, said in an e-mail Wednesday.

Smith finished third in the 100-yard backstroke (quick 49.93 seconds) last season at the CIF-SS Division 1 finals. He also touched ninth in the 100 free with a 45.95.

Smith is an excellent get for UC Santa Barbara. The 6-foot-4 senior is fast now and has the potential to get faster.

Smith also considered Biola, USC, Arizona State and Florida State.

Swimming: Edison’s Morrissey picks WAC school

Edison All-County swimmer Ellie Morrissey has committed to Northern Arizona, Chargers coach Keith Ryan reports.

The versatile senior has been a key swimmer for the Chargers since her freshman season. She helped Edison claim the CIF Division 1 title in 2009 and runner-up finishes in 2010 and 2011.

Last season, Morrissey was part of Edison’s All-County medley and 400 free relays. She is strong in all the high school freestyle events, butterfly and individual medley.

Northern Arizona also has a commitment from distance freestyler Kendall Brown of Laguna Hills and the Aquazot club.
