Football recruiting: Wilkerson signs with Stanford, talks Zumwalt

30-wilkersonmug150Tustin running back Anthony Wilkerson (6-0, 215) has signed with Stanford, he confirmed moments ago.

“It feels good,” he said in a phone interview. “All the hard work paid off. I’m ready to go up there and do big things.”

Wilkerson said he had heard about Zumwalt’s decision to decommit from Stanford and sign with UCLA.

So what does Wilkerson think of Zumwalt’s decision?

Tustin’s Anthony “All Day” Wilkerson is leading the county in rushing touchdowns. The senior, who is commited to Stanford, has run all over county opponents. Wilkerson is close to breaking DeShaun Foster’s school record for rushing yards.

Calhoun’s Games to Watch: Trabuco Hills vs. Tustin

Trabuco Hills (11-1) vs. Tustin (11-1)
Friday, 7 p.m. at Tustin High

Outlook: The bottom half of the Southwest Division bracket brings the third-seeded Mustangs to Tustin to face the second-seeded Tillers.

Trabuco Hills, which lost in the Southwest Division semifinals last year, enters on a nine-game winning streak. Over the past four games, the Mustangs are averaging 48.2 points a game and are allowing 6.5 points.

Outlook: The Tillers are averaging 41 points in three Century League victories. El Dorado has only allowed seven points in its first three league games.

Football video: Tustin overwhelms Canyon

football_blog3Anthony Wilkerson was great, as usual, with 142 yards rushing and three TDs, but it was Tustin’s defense that dominated the action as the Tillers defeated Canyon, 34-8, on Thursday night. The Tillers  intercepted Canyon QB Beau Perry five times, including two picks by Avery Lynch. Dominic Coulter returned one interception for a touchdown.

Outlook: A lot has been written about the Tustin offense, and it has all been deserved, but have you been paying attention to the defense?

Aside from the Kennedy game (28 points) and the loss to Orange Lutheran (46 points), the Tillers have allowed 12, 3 and 0 points in three of their victories.

No. 4 Orange Lutheran (0-1) vs. No. 9 Tustin (2-0)
Friday, 7:30 p.m., at Orange Coast College

Outlook: Do you remember the Lancers? Orange Lutheran hasn’t played since Aug. 30, when it opened the season with a 28-14 loss to Pickerington Central of Ohio.

They have had all this time to try to correct what went wrong in the opener.

Football: Tustin’s Wilkerson to sit out Friday’s game

football_blog3Tustin’s star running back, Anthony Wilkerson, will not play in Friday’s nonleague clash with Orange Lutheran because of a pulled hamstring, Tustin coach Myron Miller said Tuesday night.

Orange Lutheran (0-1) is ranked No. 4 in Orange County and Tustin (2-0) is No. 9.

Football recruiting: La Habra’s Quezada gets first offer

La Habra first-team All-County running back Josh Quezada, a junior, has been offered a scholarship by Fresno State, Highlanders coach Frank Mazzotta said Thursday night.

The Bulldogs like Quezada  (6-0, 190) at running back and outside linebacker, the coach said.

The Register’s other first-team running back, junior Anthony Wilkerson of Tustin, has already been offered a scholarship by Stanford.
