Anaheim sent 26 batters to the plate and 17 of them got hits against Magnolia.

Anaheim won the first meeting, 9-4, back on March 20. The Colonists led 7-2 after the first four innings in that game.

Canyon (20-10) vs. La Canada (19-9) at Pasadena City College

Prediction: The Comanches claimed their first-ever postseason victory on Tuesday but now face one of the section's most experienced playoff schools. La Canada won the Division III crown last season and will take a clear victory against a senior-dominated Canyon squad. La Canada's armada includes Spencer Borisoff, brother of USC player Devon Borisoff.

Division II second round

Servite (17-3) vs. Mission Viejo (16-11) at Capistrano Valley, 6:45 p.m.

Prediction: The Friars hit the road again and face a senior-dominated Mission Viejo squad. Co-champs of the South Coast, the Diablos are well-balanced and have a standout in lefty Andrew Baker. But Servite also is very solid and has a star in center Cruz Smithson. In mid-October, Mission Viejo measured itself against one Servite's rivals, Mater Dei, and were in the match at halftime before falling, 11-4. Servite's inside-outside attack will be too much for the Diablos and the Friars will advance to play Villa Park for a third time.

Santiago (7-2, 3-1) vs. Los Amigos (5-4, 4-0)
Friday, 7 p.m., at Garden Grove High

The scoop: From fourth to first? That’s what at stake for the Lobos. Los Amigos was the preseason pick to finish fourth in the Garden Grove League. The Cavaliers can grab a share of the title with a victory, but could also finish third.

The scoop: Can the 300-yard man Robert Cruz do it again? A victory for the Sentinels will qualify them for the playoffs for the first time since 1984.

Thursday, 7 p.m., at Western High

The scoop: A victory gives the Pioneers the outright Orange League title. A loss and the Falcons can get a share.

Loara (5-4, 1-3) vs. No. 23 Valencia (7-2, 3-1)

The scoop: The Tigers are in the playoffs, but could get a piece of the Empire League title if Pacifica beats Cypress. The Saxons need a victory and that would bolster their case for an at-large bid

The scoop: The Titans can wrap up the South Coast League title with a victory. Dana Hills needs a victory and an unlikely Aliso Niguel victory over San Clemente.

JSerra's boys water polo team this morning won a coin-flip for SECOND place in the Trinity League, leaving Santa Margarita and Servite to play for third place. That match will be played Friday at SERVITE at 4 p.m.

The Eagles forced the three-way tie by upsetting No. 8 JSerra on Wednesday. But by winning the coin-flip, the Lions helped minimize the damage.

Cornea was the top seed. She entered with a 30-0 record in league play and was named the Empire's MVP. With Wednesday's title, she is the first girls player in school history to do all three in the same season.

I watched this almost 3-hour long match and left amazed at what each competitor gave in this one.

Cornea: "I'm speechless. Sarah is a really great player. This is one of my best matches that I've played."

Blair: "It was a good match. Jenn was playing smart. I started slow but I managed to find my rhythm. "

Loara coach Shelly Noble: "Winning it the way she did shows her perseverance. She was fighting until the end. That's what champions do."

Valencia coach Mike McCall: "It was a great high school tennis match. It's a shame someone had to lose it. Both should be proud of their performance and effort."

Valencia's Candace Wu and Natalie McKay won the doubles final, defeating Cypress' Karen Woo and Beatrice Nguy 6-0, 6-2.

For those following Division I boys water polo this fall, Ventura has been mentioned as a team to watch for the playoffs and the Cougars proved it tonight at Northwood by claiming the Hank Vellekamp No. 2 Tournament with an 11-10 victory against Loyola in what is being considered the tournament's championship match.

Final standings from the top-four teams from pool play:

1. Ventura, 5-0

2. Carlsbad 4-1 (didn't play Loyola)

4. Servite 3-2

Reyes has a twisted knee, Colonists coach Lanny Booher said Tuesday. The senior tried to play last week in a loss to Santa Ana Valley but lasted one play, the coach said.

Reyes suffered the injury Oct. 2 in a nonleague victory against Loara.

Reyes' health could be one of the key storylines for an interesting playoff race in the league.

Santa Ana Valley, tied with Western for first at 2-0, faces third-place Magnolia (1-1) is a huge game Friday

Magnolia is seeking its first playoff appearance since 1984.

Anaheim (1-1) is tied for third with Magnolia with games against Century, Magnolia and perennial favorite Western still on the schedule.

The Colonists likely need to win two for their final three games, and perhaps get a little help, to crack the top-three in league. Anaheim's chance certainly improve with Reyes on the field.

Katella appealed a Southern Section ruling that declared Nielsen, a junior from Denmark, ineligible because his host family includes Katella's water polo coach, Grafton Weiss.

The school's appeal hearing was Wednesday.

Nielsen currently has no eligibility at any level.

It wasn't exactly a slam-dunk but my vote for No. 1 in the county football poll went to Tesoro, which knocked off previously No. 1-ranked Mission Viejo in impressive fashion. Tesoro can play better than it did Friday and that should be a scary thought for San Clemente this week.

Tesoro could have won that game at least 38-14 but didn't capitalize on some chances in the third quarter.

I heavily considered Los Alamitos. I saw them beat Narbonne and Narbonne would beat some county top-10 teams. The Griffins might not be dazzling the pollsters, but they are getting the job done. Kinda of like Clark Evans. He sometimes isn't pretty but he gets the job done, is super tough and makes big plays.

I also looked long and hard at Edison. The Chargers' loss to Servite hurts their case but before it is all said and done, they could still get my No. 1 vote.

With the parity in county football, there certainly is a chance the South Coast or Sunset league champions won't be 5-0.
