Girls golf: Two county players advance at Junior Girls

Canyon’s Elisabeth Bernabe and Brea Olinda’s Amy Lee each won their first round matches on Wednesday at Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, and if they win both of their matches on Thursday, the will be a part of the Golf Channel broadcast of the quarterfinals on Friday.

Boys basketball: No. 5 Foothill wins round one against No. 9 Canyon

Steven Browne scored 16 points and James Marinacci added 10 to lead No. 5 Foothill (13-2, 1-0) to a 68-51 home victory over No. 9 Canyon (11-4, 0-1) in the Century League opener for both teams.

Austin Priest led Canyon with 14 points. Anthony Bates and JoJo Ballestero scored 10 apiece.

The teams will meet again Jan. 26 at Canyon.

Girls soccer: Canyon advances to title match at Excalibur

The Canyon Comanches have moved to within one win of the Excalibur sword.

Senior Taylor Alderete scored two goals, as the Comanches defeated the Buena Bulldogs 2-0 in the semifinals of the 2011 Excalibur Tournament.

Canyon (7-1-3) will face La Costa Canyon in the tournament championship match, scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Foothill High.

To finish first a boys soccer team first must finish. Anaheim and host Kennedy both had a problem doing that on Wednesday, squandering numerous scoring chances in this nonleague game.

ALISO VIEJO – It wasn’t the kind of goal that’s often seen in soccer, one that came without using a head or foot. And it made Servite have to wait another day to see if it will advance into the championship bracket of the Aliso Cup.
