Football tough guys will wear pink

October 14th, 2008, 11:34 pm by DAN ALBANO, ocvarsity.com

If you think the color pink doesn't belong on a football field, think again.

In a very cool show of strength and support, the football teams at Tesoro and Los Alamitos (coached by Brian Barnes and his father, John, respectively) will feature players wearing new pink football gloves that have been donated by Cutters Gloves.

The pink gloves are a sign of strength in honor of October's Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Los Al will do the honors first Thursday against Marina. Tesoro will don the gloves Friday for its FSN-televised showdown against Mission Viejo at 7:30 p.m.

"They're fired up to wear them," Coach Brian Barnes said of the gloves.

October 13th, 2008, 8:21 am by DAN ALBANO, ocvarsity.com

It could be an interesting week for us football pollsters and those who debate the county top-10. What if Mission Viejo and Servite both lose? Tesoro, Edison or Los Alamitos could be headed for the top spot. My early thought is that the Diablos and Friars will both win.

Anyway, here's how I voted this week in the county football poll (The Diablos finally got my No. 1 vote):

Bridgford(s) only getting started at Mission Viejo

October 8th, 2008, 10:41 pm by DAN ALBANO, ocvarsity.com

Orange County football fans should now be well aware of Mission Viejo quarterback Allan Bridgford. But, did you know that his kid brother, Alex, is a 6-foot-2 freshman quarterback at Mission Viejo. Alex tossed six touchdowns last week against Murrieta Valley, his father, Richard Bridgford, said earlier this week. So if the rest of the South Coast League was counting the days until Allan graduated, they might not get much of a break from the Bridgfords.

Frankly Fryer: Mission Viejo vs. La Costa Canyon

September 17th, 2008, 4:13 pm by STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com

NO. 3 MISSION VIEJO (2-0) VS. LA COSTA CANYON OF CARLSBAD (2-0)

Site, time: La Costa Canyon High of Carlsbad, 7 p.m.

Outlook: Is Mission Viejo underrated, at No. 3? Maybe. It's difficult to tell just how good the Diablos are, given their two victories were in Hawaii and another at Redondo.
