La Habra replaces Espy in my county football poll

October 27th, 2008, 8:44 am by DAN ALBANO, ocvarsity.com

I must be feeling confident about who's the best football team in the county when I'm writing about ... my No. 10.

In my voting this for the county rankings, I welcome back the La Habra Highlanders and San Diego State-commit Ronnie Hillman (left) to my top-10, replacing Esperanza. The Aztecs have been hanging on for weeks and going overtime against Marina- even though the Vikings are vastly improved - creates enough doubt.

Esperanza, of course, will have a chance starting this week against Newport to change my mind, so I'm not forgetting about the Aztecs and that defense.

Babovic's attorney focusing on summertime rules

October 26th, 2008, 12:14 pm by DAN ALBANO, ocvarsity.com

The attorney for Corona del Mar water polo goalie Marin Babovic will be back in Orange County Superior Court on Monday morning for reconsideration in the senior's eligibility case.

On Oct. 15, an Orange County judge denied the Serbian varsity eligibility in an injunction hearing, siding with the Southern Section's definition of enrollment. But attorney Richard Bridgford is seeking reconsideration in the case based on state and Southern Section rules and guidelines for the summer.

Summer contact has been an obstacle for Babovic since he played for Corona del Mar during a summer tournament in Hungary.

"In a nutshell, as with any other incoming student, Babovic was eligible to participate in water polo at Corona del Mar High School prior to his attendance in the Fall under what is known as the CIF Summer Rules," Bridgford wrote in an e-mail.

ET water polo reaches semifinals, Babovic case not over

October 24th, 2008, 5:26 pm by DAN ALBANO, ocvarsity.com

El Toro's boys water polo team beat Mater Dei, 9-5, to reach the semifinals of the North-South Challenge on Saturday. Orange County's top-ranked team will play the winner of the second-round match between Sacred Heart Prep and Santa Barbara.

In other news later Friday night, the attorney for Corona del Mar goalie Martin Babovic said he will be in court Monday morning for reconsideration in a case that left the Serbian ineligible for varsity play. Richard Bridgford said in an e-mail that new evidence has been discovered. Stay tuned for more details.

Tesoro gets my vote for No. 1 in county football

October 20th, 2008, 8:14 am by DAN ALBANO, ocvarsity.com

It wasn't exactly a slam-dunk but my vote for No. 1 in the county football poll went to Tesoro, which knocked off previously No. 1-ranked Mission Viejo in impressive fashion. Tesoro can play better than it did Friday and that should be a scary thought for San Clemente this week.

Tesoro could have won that game at least 38-14 but didn't capitalize on some chances in the third quarter.

Bridgfords had tough week

October 18th, 2008, 12:05 pm by DAN ALBANO, ocvarsity.com

Not only did Tesoro knock off top-ranked Mission Viejo and QB Allan Bridgford on Friday night, it turns out that the Orange County Superior Court Judge who ruled against Bridgford's father, attorney Richard Bridgford, in the Corona del Mar water polo case also is ... get this ... a Tesoro parent.

Babovic bid for varsity eligibility denied (updated)

October 15th, 2008, 11:53 am by DAN ALBANO, ocvarsity.com

SANTA ANA An Orange County Superior Court Judge late Wednesday morning denied Corona del Mar water polo player Martin Babovic's appeal for varsity eligibility.

Babovic, a foreign exchange student from Serbia, has been cleared by the Southern Section to play junior varsity but was seeking to play varsity.

As it was late in Tuesday's session, the definition of enrollment loomed large in the decision by Judge Steven L. Perk.
