It looked like the 52nd Brea Lions Orange County All-Star Game was going to be a showcase for the South Rebels, but the North Yankees turned in a valiant effort in a 23-22 loss to the South on Friday night at Orange Coast College.

The South jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first half, but the North scored 22 consecutive points to take a 22-17 lead with 2:00 left in the third quarter.

South holds on to beat North in O.C. all-star game

July 16th, 2010, 10:13 pm by

Playing for the South team, Trabuco Hills' Shane DeCillo leaps toward a first down during the first half of Friday's North South All Star game, at Orange Coast College.

COSTA MESA – Leading by just three points in the fourth period, the South and quarterback Matt Viles didn’t drive for a touchdown with the game on the line.

But the Edison quarterback helped the South do the next best thing Friday night.

The South offense held the ball for almost eight minutes to help preserve a 24-21 victory in the Brea Lions Orange County all-star football game at Orange Coast College.

After the North trimmed the South lead to 24-21 with 8:16 left, Viles and the South kept the ball away from the North until 27 seconds left in the fourth seconds left. The North offense got the ball at its 15 with no timeouts.

The North ran two plays before time expired and the South has its second consecutive victory. The North leads the series, 25-23-3.

South coach John Shipp said Huntington beach wide receiver/defensive back Kaller Roemer is out with a cut hand.

Football: South All-Stars focus on execution

July 14th, 2010, 4:44 pm by

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Like most high school all-star football games, the short preparation time before the Brea Lions Orange County All-Star Game has only offered the stars on both sides a handful of practices, meaning the North and South All-Stars will run the risk of looking sloppy and turnover-prone at 7:15 p.m. on Friday at Orange Coast College.

Still, Coach John Shipp ran his South squad through a full practice Wednesday afternoon at his home field behind Fountain Valley High, tightening the spread offense and giving the 4-4 defense a few repetitions in the final full-pads practice.
