Staszak remained in the hospital overnight, but could be released later today, Johnson said.

The coach said Staszak had no headache this morning and the cracked vertebrae is expected to heal with no complications.

Robinson was hurt, too, on the play just 1:16 into the game but was able to walk off the field.

Staszak remained on the field and was administered to by Mission Viejo longtime team doctor Mark Legome and team trainer Jo Schafhausen. Johnson praised Lebome and Schafhausen for the quick work. Paramedics arrived, and took Staszak to Mission Hospital.

Mission Viejo, ranked No. 2 in OC, won, 70-7. Johnson said it was difficult to concentrate on the game the rest of the evening because of the players' injuries.

"That just put a cloud over whole night," he said. "It was very scary."

What happened the first time they met: Aliso Niguel won, 45-41

Why is this so important: This week is the playoffs for the Cougars. They started the week one game behind the Wolverines for third place in the South Coast League.

The goal is to finish in the top half of your league standings. Can the Cougars summon one great final stand? Do it for the striped shorts?

The Cougars had lost three consecutive league games before defeating San Clemente on Feb. 6.

Aliso Niguel nearly beat Dana Hills last week.

All the Wolverines need is one victory to seal a playoff berth.

Will it happen?

SAN CLEMENTE - The official stat sheet will say that Aliso Niguel senior Haley Horton’s only numerical contribution in Tuesday’s 2-1 victory over top-ranked San Clemente was an assist on the winning goal.

And while her free kick into the middle of the box was the catalyst for fellow senior Mollie Curran’s winning header, it was the contributions that Horton made throughout the Wolverines' hard-fought victory that might have had the biggest overall impact in the contest.

With the Tritons offense in attack mode from the beginning of the contest, it was Horton who had the task of heading the backline defense responsible for containing a bevy of talented Triton forwards and midfielders.

Yet instead of shying away from the challenge of covering the Tritons’ multiple scoring threats, Horton and her teammates relied on their continuity and embraced it.

“Many of us have played together for a long time and we know that we have to go hard for everything,” she said. “With any team that we face, we take it like they are the best team in the league because they always step up for us.”

Though the Tritons regularly managed to get the ball into scoring positions, they were only able to put a ball into the net on a penalty kick, as Horton helped stymie the Triton attack in their attacking third throughout the game with her quickness to loose balls and physical brand of defense.

Horton was adamant that the physical play of her competitors doesn’t affect how the Wolverines approach each game.

“Being physical is a part of the game,” said Horton. “Obviously we’d rather hit than be hit.”

That theme of physicality came to a head late in the contest, as several players became involved in testy confrontations after the rough play was allowed to continue without being called.

Horton said a key element for the Wolverines success amongst the rough play late in the game was their willingness to not let their emotions get the best of them.

“The good thing about this team is that we play for each other and don’t get caught up in dumb things,” she said.

Though her primarily objective is to help the team, Horton says that each time she steps on the field, her individual goal is to be a leader.

"I want to help set the precedent and clear the things away from the net,” said Horton. “I feel that it’s on me to push out energy for the team.”

With the South Coast League shaping up to be a tight race down the stretch, Horton says that remaining a cohesive unit will be key to continued success.

“We just need to be aware of where everyone is on the field and come together as a team,” she said.
