An interesting week for the vote … last week, Ocean View beat Mission Viejo; Orange Lutheran lost twice, yes, but to the top two teams in the state rankings (Mater Dei and Long Beach Poly) …

My vote, one of six that are used to compile the top 10, went like this today …

Aliso Niguel grad’s squirrely baseball card

January 31st, 2012, 12:24 pm by

Aliso Niguel alum Skip Schumaker of the St. Louis Cardinals is a fine player and a great guy — he recently ran a youth baseball clinic from which all proceeds went toward the medical expenses of a young local athlete’s family who needed the assistance.

(And I sat next to him at the Rose Bowl game a couple of years ago. Super nice guy.)

But he is also widely known as the guy at the plate when a squirrel crossed the batter’s box during Game 4 of the NLDS this past October.

So who is getting more space on some versions of Skip’s 2012 baseball card? The squirrel!

“He jousted well”

December 26th, 2011, 6:53 am by

That’s what somebody wrote at the occonnect message board about Steve Burt, a longtime assistant coach and overall supporter of high school football in south county. He was on the Aliso Niguel staff when the school was new and won a CIF championship.

According to his friends at occonnect, Mr. Burt passed away last week.

I sometimes tell people who are giving me grief, “Hey, I need my cage rattled once in a while” and Mr. Burt  rattled this cage with the best of them. Guys like him make me work harder.

He kicked my tail, and everyone else’s, when it came to predicting winners of county football games. The man knew his stuff!!!

There still are plenty of you readers out there who are going to come after me, sure. But you won’t be the smartest one who has done so.

Mr. Burt posted here and there as “Wiley Wolverine,” a tribute to his loyalty to Aliso Niguel’s Wolverines. He loved USC football. He loved high school football and high school football players and coaches.

Steve Burt, you jousted well!
