Football: Great news on Mission Viejo's Staszak

October 31st, 2009, 1:16 pm by STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com

football_blog6Mission Viejo football  defensive back Jake Staszak, taken to Mission Hospital on Friday, night suffered a cracked vertebrae in the middle of his back from a collision with Aliso Niguel player Anthony Robinson last nigh, Mission Viejo coach Bob Johnson said today.

Staszak remained in the hospital overnight, but could be released later today, Johnson said.

The coach said Staszak had no headache this morning and the cracked vertebrae is expected to heal with no complications.

Robinson was hurt, too, on the play just 1:16 into the game but was able to walk off the field.

Staszak remained on the field and was administered to by Mission Viejo longtime team doctor Mark Legome and team trainer Jo Schafhausen. Johnson praised Lebome and Schafhausen for the quick work. Paramedics arrived, and took Staszak to Mission Hospital.

Mission Viejo, ranked No. 2 in OC, won, 70-7. Johnson said it was difficult to concentrate on the game the rest of the evening because of the players' injuries.

"That just put a cloud over whole night," he said. "It was very scary."
