Football: Mater Dei falls in finals of Air Strike tournament (updated)

Mater Dei’s football team and some of its up-and-coming players reached the finals of the Air Strike passing tournament Saturday but fell to Long Beach Poly, 21-14, at Dana Hills.

The Monarchs were led by junior-to-be quarterback Ryan McMahon, who showed a good arm and the ability to connect with several receivers.

Poly sealed the victory with an interception but McMahon had an excellent day.

The player who jumped out the most for Mater Dei might have have been wide out/outside linebacker Thomas Duarte (6-3, 225). The junior-to-be is a big guy who can move. A few times, Duarte lined up on offense next to Josh Cook (6-4, 235), so McMahon has some very big targets.

Mater Dei receiver Jameson Field also had a big day.

Football: Los Al, Edison join Mater Dei in Air Strike semifinal

Edison quarterback Alek Torgersen threw a touchdown on the final play to lift the Chargers past Loyola, 27-26, in an exciting quarterfinal here at the Air Strike passing tournament.

Edison plays Long Beach Poly in one semifinal.

Los Alamitos out-dueled St. John Bosco, 40-34, in the quarterfinal. The Griffins take on Mater Dei in the other semifinal.

Football: Mater Dei, Edison and Los Al advance at Air Strike tournament

Mater Dei went an impressive 4-0 in pool play to earn a bye to the 3:30 semifinals here at the Air Strike passing tournament at Dana Hills on Saturday.

The Monarchs will be play the winner of the St. John Bosco-Los Alamitos quarterfinal coming up at 2:30 p.m.

Long Beach Poly  also went 4-0 to earn the other bye to the 3:30 semifinals. The Jackrabbits will play the winner of the Edison-Loyola quarterfinal game coming up at 2:30 p.m.

Football recruiting: Servite’s Averill, Pauu adds offers, Friars to miss Air Strike

Here’s a couple more football recruiting notes on two-time defending Pac-5 Division champion Servite:

* Junior All-County offensive tackle Travis Averill (6-4, 275) has been offered by Washington, Friars coach Troy Thomas reports. Averill also has Pac-12 offers from UCLA, Arizona and Colorado.

* Junior WR/TE Ainslie Johnson (6-2, 215) performed well at a camp at UCLA on Sunday, Thomas said in a text message. Johnson clocked a 4.65 in the 40-yard dash.

Football: Loaded field headed to Air Strike tourney on Saturday

Some of Orange County’s top football teams — including three from the Trinity League — are headed to the Air Strike passing tournament at Dana Hills on Saturday. Pool play starts at 9 a.m. The championship game is set for 4;30 p.m. Here is the pools for the outstanding offseason event:
