Girls volleyball: Newport Harbor-CdM preview http://ocvarsity.freedomblogging.com/2009/11/06/girls-volleyball-newport-harbor-cdm-preview/72695/ http://ocvarsity.freedomblogging.com/2009/11/06/girls-volleyball-newport-harbor-cdm-preview/72695/#comments Fri, 06 Nov 2009 19:56:18 +0000 Chris Tobolski, OCVarsity.com http://ocvarsity.freedomblogging.com/?p=72695 girls_volleyball_blogUnlike the "Battle of the Bell" football game between Edison and Fountain Valley, tonight's showdown between No. 2 Newport Harbor and No. 5 Corona del Mar didn't need to switch venues or deal with a ticket uproar.

The teams meet in the "Battle of the Bay" girls volleyball style tonight at 6 p.m. at Newport Harbor High. Corona del Mar is seeking its first victory in the series since beating the Sailors in five games in 2004.

Newport Harbor wrapped up a share of the Sunset League title last night by sweeping Edison. CdM defeated Beckman to finish the Pacific Coast League undefeated.

Newport Harbor

Record: 23-6, 9-1

County ranking: No. 2

CIF-SS Division I-AA: No. 2

Notable victories: Long Beach Poly, Santa Margarita, Assumption (Kentucky), Los Alamitos, Torrey Pines

Notable losses: Arichbishop Mitty, Los Alamitos, La Costa Canyon, Dos Pueblos

Corona del Mar

Record: 22-4, 8-0

County ranking: No. 5

CIF-SS Division II-AA ranking: No. 2

Notable victories: Santa Margarita, Santa Barbara, Harvard-Westlake

Notable loses: Mira Costa, Los Alamitos, Archbishop Mitty

Outlook: Corona del Mar has nothing to lose in this one, and it should allow the Sea Kings to play loose and free. On the flip side, it would seem a Newport Harbor loss could hurt the Sailors' playoff seeding. Currently ranked No. 2 in their Division, a Sailors victory would presumably wrap up the second seed. CdM, evidenced by a big victory over Santa Barbara last weekend, is playing great volleyball heading into tonight's match and the playoffs. The Sea Kings need to turn in a spectacular defensive effort if they hope to beat Newport Harbor. The Sailors height and versatility make slowing the Sailors a difficult task.

Prediction: Newport Harbor in four.

O.C. football playoff picture coming into focus http://ocvarsity.freedomblogging.com/2009/11/06/oc-football-playoff-picture-coming-into-focus/72669/ http://ocvarsity.freedomblogging.com/2009/11/06/oc-football-playoff-picture-coming-into-focus/72669/#comments Fri, 06 Nov 2009 09:26:35 +0000 CARLOS ARIAS http://ocvarsity.freedomblogging.com/?p=72669 football_blogWith only two weeks left in the regular season, it's time to examine the playoff implications of the remaining games and the playoff possibilities for Orange County teams.

First thing you need to know about the playoffs is who gets the guaranteed playoff berths. Four-team leagues are guaranteed two entries, five- or six-team leagues are guaranteed three entries and seven- or eight-team leagues are guaranteed four entries.

If your team isn't one of those lucky squads with a guaranteed ticket punched to the playoffs, you can still get into the postseason with an at-large berth. At-large teams must have a .500 record or better for their complete schedules to be considered. If there are no .500 teams entered as at-large entries, the next best record as submitted by leagues will be taken. However, no team under .500 will be placed until all .500 at-large entries have been placed.

Here are the criteria for at-large entries: 1. Head-to-head competition of teams under consideration (4 points); 2. Overall strength of the league from which the team is entered (1 point); 3. Overall win-loss record (1 point); 4. Strength against common opponents (1 point); 5. Strength of schedule (2 points, using overall win-loss record of opponents).

At-large entry forms must be in the CIF-SS office by 9 a.m. on Nov. 14. Every few years a team forgets to get its at-large entry form in on time. It's tragic. Don't be that team that doesn't take care of its paperwork.

The Football At-Large Selection Committee for 11-Man football divisions will meet on Nov. 14 at the CIF-SS office to determine the at-large berths.

Pairings will be announced on Nov. 15, and we'll have them as soon as they're available on ocvarsity.com.

I shoved all relevant data into the OCVarsity Super Computer and here is what it spit out. Click on the links to go to each league's information:

Playoff picture: Academy League http://ocvarsity.freedomblogging.com/2009/11/06/playoff-picture-academy-league/72665/ http://ocvarsity.freedomblogging.com/2009/11/06/playoff-picture-academy-league/72665/#comments Fri, 06 Nov 2009 09:20:52 +0000 CARLOS ARIAS http://ocvarsity.freedomblogging.com/?p=72665 football_blogHere is a look at the playoff picture for Academy League teams from Orange County:

ACADEMY LEAGUE

St. Margaret's (7-1, 1-0): Even if the Tartans, ranked No. 1 in the East Valley, slipped on a banana peel and lost their final two games they would still get one of the four-at-large berths in the East Valley. The more likely scenario is St. Margaret's pounds Brethren Christian and Sage Hill to take the league championship, the top seed and begin another run at East Valley championship.

Sage Hill (6-2, 1-0): The Lightning, ranked No. 5 in the East Valley, are a virtual playoff lock even in the event of the slip-on-a-banana-peel theory. The more likely outcome is Sage Hill beats Crean Lutheran South to clinch second place and an automatic playoff berth.

Brethren Christian (4-4, 0-1): Asking the Warriors to pull off an upset against top-ranked St. Margaret's on Friday is nearly an impossible task unless they are able to implement the slip-on-a-banana-peel theory. Brethren Christian will probably lose to St. Margaret's, but they will be a great at-large candidate if they close out the regular season with a victory over Crean Lutheran South. Remember, the Warriors played Sage Hill tough, losing only by a touchdown.

Crean Lutheran South (0-6, 0-1): The only way CLS gets in the playoffs is if it pulls off the most stunning two-week stretch in county football history and it upsets Sage Hill and Brethren Christian. The only problem is CLS has lost all six of its games and has failed to score a single point all season.
