Dan Albano
Dan Albano
OCVarsity Staff Writer (Aquatics and Football)
Dan Albano was born in Pennsylvania but was spared from becoming a fan of the Phillies, Flyers or Eagles thanks to his family’s move to Southern California in the mid-1970s. His fascination with the Showtime Lakers and Magic Johnson led him to give up soccer and become a practice player on his high school varsity basketball team.
Dan graduated from Cal State Fullerton, where he worked on the school newspaper, The Daily Titan. At the Titan, he reported on everything from custodian grievances, to lawsuits against the university, to wrestling. While still in college in the fall of 1993, he joined The Register. Over the years, he has covered community sports, junior colleges and minor league baseball, but now writes mostly on high school water polo, swimming and football.
Because of his enthusiasm for aquatics, his nickname in the sports department is “Aqua Dan.” In high school, he was known as “Captain” or “Cap,” a reference to the former pro wrestling manager, Captain Lou Albano (no relation).
