I was born in Inglewood on January 20, 1976. I was raised in Compton.
My mom tells a story that I actually began reading the sports pages as a young kid. I can’t confirm or deny that, but it is her story and she’s sticking to it.
I’m not really sure when or how it all happened, but I’m glad it did.
After graduating from high school, I attended El Camino Community College where I received my first taste of journalism. I didn’t have any clue of what I wanted to do in college, in fact I wasn’t even sure why I was there on the first day, but I eventually enrolled in a Journalism 1 class, joined the school paper (The Warwhoop) and the rest as they say is history.
I transferred to Cal State Fullerton where I spent a couple of years on the Daily Titan, covering the baseball team.
After graduation I sat around for a couple of months and thought ‘What’s next.’
I struggled to find a job out of college. I took freelance gigs at The Torrance Daily Breeze and the Inland Valley Voice in Rancho Cucamonga, just to stay in the business.
For a brief moment, I even toyed with the idea of becoming a teacher (although I’m not sure which subject I would have taught) before I was hired part-time here at the Register in 2003.
I’ve covered just about everything, including high school badminton (which was my very first assignment here. I’m not sure if that was a test or not).
I was promoted to full-time later in 2003 and was immediately thrown onto the wrestling beat (another test, I’m sure). Too many trips to Bakersfield later… I’m still here.
I have had several beats since joining The Register including boys soccer, girls and boys volleyball and the Los Angeles Galaxy futbol club.
I’ve also had the pleasure of covering local colleges, NBA, Boxing and even NASCAR.
My favorite high school seasons are the fall (Football) and winter (Wrestling and Basketball) and summer, even though it gets shorter every year.
I’ve had the pleasure to work with some of the best in the business and Steve Fryer.
When I’m not working, I’m probably reading, watching sports, sleeping or listening to hip-hop and R&B.
