Second-round voting starts over for boys athlete of the year

You voted in the first round and helped eight Orange County boys athletes move on in the voting for the fans’ choice as the O.C. athlete of the year.

Now it’s time to start the second-round balloting over to see which athlete will be honored at the Athletes of the Year Dinner on June 9, hosted by Dave & Buster’s in Irvine.

Orange County high school sports fans spoke up with their votes in the first round, and eight of the top girls athletes advanced in the competition to become the fans’ choice as Orange County’s female athlete of the year.

Second-round voting suspended

Several fans have contacted us this morning to say that they are having problems voting for fans’ choices as Orange County’s athletes of the year.

Because of some first-round voting irregularities, the functionality of the voting system was changed a little to avoid what appeared to be automated voting. This change apparently kept some fans from voting even once.

We will check out the issue, make the appropriate fixes and start second-round voting over this afternoon. Since some fans had trouble while others did not, starting the round from scratch (especially since we were so early in the round) is the only fair way to handle things.

Latest from West Coast Championships

Conditions picked up at Huntington Beach Pier on the second day of the West Coast Championships presented by Nike 6.0.

The opening heats of the open men’s and open juniors went off without a hitch, taking advantage of 4- to 5-foot high waves created by a combination of building southwest and northwest swells.

The event, in its 13th year, showcases some of best youth talent along the west coast.

That talent was on display Friday morning, with local surfers Christian Saenz of Huntington Beach, Shaw Kobayashi of San Clemente and Colin Moran of Costa Mesa advancing to Saturday mornings’ open men’s second round heats.
