Softball: Wagner’s road to WCWS blog

May 20th, 2013, 10:27 pm by

Michigan pitcher Haylie Wagner, a former three-time All-County selection from El Modena High, will be providing OCVarsity with a daily blog throughout the NCAA softball championships and hopefully into the College World Series.

Hi Everyone! My name is Haylie Wagner and I play softball at the University of Michigan. I am from the City of Orange and a proud El Modena Alumni! Woohoo! Go Vanguards!

Every year my team and I always have the same goal; win a National Championship in Oklahoma City, and we are on the road to just that.  I am going to give you an inside look on Michigan Softball and keep you updated through the tournament on all the fun and action we have!  I hope you enjoy it!

This past weekend we came together as a team and ended up beating Cal to be Regional Champs, which is the first step to OKC.  Now if you watched, you all saw the action on the field but you don’t know what goes on behind the scenes between games and game days.  Before the tournament began Thursday night our coaches took us out to dinner and then we had an ice cream and movie night with the team and coaches.  We watched Cinderella Man and everyone was really inspired by the movie.  We have all come to realize that a team and being able to win games all comes from within and doing everything you can to fight and win no matter what the obstacles are.

Now we are onto the next chapter, Super Regionals, and I am blessed to be able to say that Michigan Softball is 1 of 16 teams left to practice Tuesday afternoon! Can’t wait to tell you more tomorrow! I hope everyone has a wonderful day and GO BLUE!

Softball: Palomino breaks OC home run record

May 16th, 2013, 4:40 pm by

Mission Viejo’s Alyssa Palomino hit her 18th homer of the year, breaking Lauren Chamberlain’s single-season county record. Mission Viejo leads Aliso Niguel 1-0 in the top of the second.

Jenna Holcomb gets down a bunt down the third-base line … E-5!!! She’s on to lead off the top of the sixth for Los Al.

Erika Crissman’s ground out advances Holcomb to second.

Megan Geer lines out to short and Holcomb almost gets doubled up at second.

Rachel Sellers flies out to center field to end the inning.

MLK 3, Los Al 1 after 6 innings.

Softball: This is it

May 16th, 2013, 4:36 pm by

Los Alamitos is down to its final three outs and has its 4, 5 and 6 hitters coming up in the top of the seventh.

MLK has a 3-1 lead and Alabama-committed Alexis Osorio in the circle.

Mattie Scheele flies out to center field. One down.

LMU-bound Alex Finie singles to right field. Here comes a pinch runner for Finie.

Kate Prior pops out to short. Two down.

Taylor Covington doubles to left-center field to drive in a run and cut MLK’s lead to 3-2. This one ain’t over, yet.

Bionca Trejo pops up in foul territory, but MLK’s first baseman makes the running catch to end the game.

MLK defeats Los Al, 3-2, in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs. MLK plays the Orange Lutheran-Saugus winner. OLu was winning 1-0 in that game the last I heard.

Nicole DeWitt hits a grand slam and Pacifica leads El Modena, 5-0, in the bottom of the fourth.

Softball: Geer drops a solo bomb on MLK

May 16th, 2013, 4:19 pm by

I told you Tennessee-bound Megan Geer was Los Al’s best hitter before Jenna Holcomb got thrown out trying to steal last inning with Geer at the plate.

Well, Geer just led off the top of the fourth with a solo bomb to left-center field. That’s Geer’s 13th homer of the year and it cuts MLK’s lead to 2-1.

Emily Ramelot leads off the bottom of the fourth with a bunt single for MLK.

Stephanie Gutierrez grounds to short, Jate Prior makes the long throw, but first baseman Alex Finie can’t keep her foot on the bag. MLK has runners on first and second with two outs.

Lu Lu Gargicevich with a grounder to short, Los Al tries to get runner at third and … she’s safe. THE BASES ARE JUICED!!!

Los Al’s freshman pitcher Jade Loe enduces two pop outs to get out of the jam.

MLK 2, Los Al 1 after 4 innings.

Pacifica leads El Mo 1-0 in the top of the third.

OLu and Saugus are scoreless in the bottom of the second.

Softball: MLK wants more

May 16th, 2013, 4:15 pm by

MLK ace Alexis Osorio with a quick 1-2-3 inning to retire Los Al in the top of the fifth.

Alessandra Gargicevich-Alemeida (Holy smokes! That’s a mouthful, and she has a sister on the team) leads off the bottom of the fifth with a double for MLK.

Make that back-to-back doubles. This one was by Daphne Pofek and that drives in a run to make it 3-1. Pofek is 3 for 3 with three RBI.

Emily Ramelot singles to right field and MLK has runners on first and third.

Kelly Cobb lines out to third and Pofek almost gets doubled up.

Stephanie Gutierrez ground sout to end the inning.

MLK 3, Los Al 1 after 5 innings.

Edison and Valley View are scoreless in the fifth.

Jade Vecvanags leads off the bottom of the third with a solo bomb and OLu leads Saugus, 1-0.

Softball: Great Caesar’s Ghost!

May 16th, 2013, 3:48 pm by

Jenna Holcomb draws a one-out walk for Los Al in the top of the third. That’s the second straight inning MLK ace Alexis Osorio has given up a one-out walk. Can Los Al find a way to manufacture a run.

Erika Crissman sacrifices Holcomb to second and that brings up Tennessee-bound Megan Gerr. This is Los Al’s best hitter, and they have a lot of good hitters.

Great Caesar’s Ghost!! I can’t believe this just happened. Holcomb tries to steal third and catcher Kelly Cobb guns her down at third to end the inning. That’s the second time Los Al has had a runner thrown out trying to steal third. I mean, she was already in scoring position and you have your best hitter up. I don’t know what to make of that one.

Lu Lu Gargicevich singles to lead things off for MLK in the bottom of the third.

Here comes the top of the order.

McKenzie Phillips walks and then Hayleigh Weissenbach sacrifice sthe runners to second and third. One down.

Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida (Wow! That’s a mouthful) hits a hard grounder to third and the runners can’t advance. Two down.

Daphne Pofek rips a two-run single up the middle and MLK takes a 2-0 lead.

MLK 2, Los Al 0 after 3 innings.

Softball: Live from M.L. King High in Riverside

May 16th, 2013, 3:35 pm by

I have the Mobile OCVarsity Media Center set up behind the right-field fence at M.L. King High of Riverside where the Sunset League’s No. 3 team, Los Alamitos, is taking on Big VIII League-champion MLK in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 1 softball playoffs.

MLK missed out on getting one of the top four seeds in Division 1 even though it won one of the toughest leagues in So Cal. The Wolves are led by Alabama-committed pitcher Alexis Osorio, who is one of the top pitchers in the state.

Los Al doesn’t have that level of pitching, but the Griffins have plenty of sticks, led by Tennessee-bound Megan Geer, who has hit 12 bombs.

I talked to Los Al coach Rob Weil before the game.

“We’ll see whuch team shows up,” he says.

The MLK football team just showed up, performed a Haka and left.

IT’S TIIIIIIME!!!!

Softball: Los Al, MLK scoreless through two

May 16th, 2013, 3:33 pm by

LMU-bound Alex Finie draws a one-out walk for Los Al in the top of the second. Base runners are hard to come by with Alabama-committed Alexis Osorio in the circle for MLK.

Osorio strikes out Kate Prior and Taylor Covington to end the inning. No harm done.

Kelly Cobb picks up a two-out single for MLK in the bottom of the second. MLK strands her.

MLK 0, Los Al 0 after 2 innings.

Pacifica takes a 1-0 lead on El Mo. That game is in the top of the second.
