Ocean View wins first title since 1985

Saturday, May 31st, 2008 by Carlos Arias

Bishop Amat loaded up the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh. Ocean View’s ace Holli Floetker walked in a run to make it 8-3.

Alyssa Ramirez hit a fly ball down the right field line. If it would have dropped it could have cleared the bases, but Ocean View right fielder Sarah Craig made an outstanding diving grab to end the game.

Ocean View wins its first championship since it won the Division 4-A title in 1985. The Seahawks closed out the season with 18 consecutive victories. Congratulations Seahawks. It was a great season.

Ocean View explodes for eight runs in the sixth

Saturday, May 31st, 2008 by Carlos Arias

It looked like the game was slipping away from Ocean View after the Seahawks gave up an unearned run in the top of the sixth to fall behind by two runs.

That was before the bottom of the sixth when the Seahawks sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight runs to take an 8-2 lead.

An error by Lancers pitcher Amy Lwin to start the inning got things started for Ocean View.

A bloop single to center by Brenna Klein drove in the first run.

Ocean View had the bases loaded with no outs for Brandice Cutspec, who delivered one of the biggest hits in the program’s history. Cutspec belted a towering shot to left-center that cleared the fence by at least 15 feet for a grand slam. Bishop Amat left fielder Erika Gonzalez never gave up on the play and went crashing the plastic fence. But there was never any doubt about Cutspec’s shot. It was gone from the moment it left her bat.

Bishop Amat gets on scoreboard first

Saturday, May 31st, 2008 by Carlos Arias

Bishop Amat’s leadoff hitter Erika Gonzalez took advantage of an error by Ocean View’s shortstop to get on to start the fourth.

After Gonzalez got on, Martin Henderson of the L.A. Times turned to me and said the only way Bishop Amat is going to score off Holli Floetker on some fluke play because of how good she is pitching. He was right.

Alissa Oddo moved Gonzalez to second with a sacrifice bunt.

Gonzalez took third on a passed ball.

Alyssa Ramirez walked to set up a first and third situation.

Lancers coach Walt Martin called for a double steal and the Seahawks took the bait. As soon as Ocean View catcher Nikole Afusia let go of the ball on her throw to second, Gonzalez took off. Ocean View’s second baseman cut off the throw and tried to get Gonzalez at the plate, but she never had a shot. Gonzalez scored easily for a 1-0 Lancers’ lead.

Rosary assistant coach Tom Tice came by press row and said “a battle-tested team wouldn’t have made that mistake.” He meant Ocean View should have let Ramirez take second base un-contested.

Floetker ended up getting the final two batters on a come-backer and a strikeout, so she would have gotten out of trouble if Ocean View had not bit on thye first-and-third play.
