Thursday, August 28th, 2008 by DAN ALBANO, ocvarsity.com

Jim SpragueI stopped by Los Alamitos this morning to interview quarterback Clark Evans and stumbled onto one heck of a water polo note. Legendary water polo coach Jim Sprague (formerly at Sunny Hills, most recently at Servite) has joined ranks with Los Alamitos boss Dave Carlson to form one of the greatest coaching duos in county high school water polo history.

Mission Viejo4. Mission Viejo (4-6-1) – The Diablos got bounced out of the playoffs quickly last year, by Orange Lutheran, so they are out to make amends. They have the ammo to do so, too.

Water polo: Foothill adds two top foreign players

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 by DAN ALBANO, ocvarsity.com

I had heard whispers for weeks that Foothill’s boys water polo program might be adding a foreign player, and now I have confirmation that the Knights have two.

Yes, it appears that at the very least, one of the strongest returning rosters in Orange County and Southern Section is getting deeper.

Irvine’s Abele drawing a lot of attention

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 by DAN ALBANO, ocvarsity.com

Nik AbeleIrvine two-way lineman Nik Abele (6-6, 255) has scholarship offers from Boise State, Colorado State, Nevada, San Diego State, UNLV and Utah, but he really wants to land at USC.

Abele has attended two camps at USC and hopes the Trojans will take notice of him during the season.

The six schools that have offered Abele have recruited him as a offensive lineman but Abele said he prefers to play defense. He hasn’t set up any official recruiting trips.

In terms of other schools showing interest, Abele mentioned another Pac-10 school: Oregon State.

Fryer: Continuing the St. Margaret’s debate, because …

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 by STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com

Well, because it’s driving me crazy. To my great colleague, Dan Albano, and others I have a statement and a question …

In 2007, Mount Union went 9-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference and averaged 52 points a game doing so; that points-per-game average was the highest in Division III football.

Should Mount Union thus have been in the AP top 25?

Here is the AP final top 25 for 2007. Which of these teams would have Mount Union defeated in ‘07?

St. Margaret’s gets help from Pac-10 QB

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 by DAN ALBANO, ocvarsity.com

Tartans football coach Harry Welch is so high on his quarterback David Mothander, he said the 6-foot-2, 172-pound senior could have been the passer on many of his teams at Canyon of Canyon Country.

During the offseason, Mothander did pick up some tips from one of Welch’s top stars at Canyon — quarterback Nate Longshore. The senior quarterback at Cal spent time with Mothander at St. Margaret’s.

Surprisingly, Longshore hasn’t been tabbed the starter this season at Cal but I’m sure he helped Mothander.

Welch added that if he were at Canyon and Mothander was his quarterback, he would feel good about the season.

Top 25 countdown: No. 5

Edison5. Edison (8-4 in 2007) — This team is known for throwing the ball, but it might use the running game quite a bit more this year. That still should translate to plenty of victories for the Chargers, who shared the Sunset League championship with Esperanza last year.

Top 25 countdown: No. 6

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 by STEVE FRYER, ocvarsity.com

Servite6. Servite (9-3) – They don’t have the stars, such as Matt Kalil and D.J. Shoemate, they had year, but the Friars have enough good ones coming back and the usual grit and team spirit to be a factor in the ultra-tough Trinity League.
