GIRLS HOOPS: Shinoda commits to UC Santa Barbara

Junior point guard Blair Shinoda of Foothill verbally committed to UC Santa Barbara, Knights coach Bill Seibert confirmed.

Shinoda, a 5-10 point guard, has started since her freshman season along with Christina Marinacci, who recently committed to USC. Shinoda averaged 9.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.9 steals per game this past season.

Foothill’s Christina Marinacci verbally commits to USC

Foothill star basketball player Christina MarinacciJunior Christina Marinacci has piled up all the post season accolades and now she has decided where she will playing basketball after she graduates from Foothill in 2009.

“I verbally committed to USC this morning,” Marinacci said. “I love the campus, the coaches and most importantly its close to home. I’m glad I finally pulled the trigger.”

Marinacci is a three-time All-County player, three-time All-CIF player and two time Sea View League MVP.

Her versatility has made her one of the county’s premier players as her career 20.1 points per game, 10 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 3 assists would indicate.

Christina Marinacci gets out on the fastbreak.The 2007-08 girls basketball season featured many great performances from Orange County players.

The All-County team that runs in the news paper didn’t have enough spots to honor all of them, so I have added the All-Senior, All-Junior, All-Sophomore and All-Freshmen teams and Player os the Year awards for each class to OCVarsity.com.

GIRLS HOOPS: Esperanza’s Roberts resigns

Matt Roberts resigned as Esperanza’s girls basketball coach last week.

Roberts was an assistant at Esperanza for five season before taking over as the head coach the past four seasons. He led the Aztecs to an 81-34 record and two Sunset League championships.

When “eating my pretzels” goes wrong

The second quarter is underway and Frank Burlison of the LBP Telegram is nowhere to be found. He’s probably refilling my serving of pretzel sticks he ate. I don’t like when people mess with my pretzels. I keep it real. Fryer says I should ask a Raider fan sitting nearby to help me handle the situation. I wonder what Fryer means by that.
