Recruiting flash: LosAl’s Evans commits

Saturday, July 12th, 2008 by dalbano

Los Alamitos senior-to-be quarterback Clark Evans (6-6, 233) has committed to Colorado, he said Saturday at the Edison passing tournament.

FLASH: Edison finds QB, captures passing tournament

Saturday, July 12th, 2008 by dalbano

HUNTINGTON BEACH Behind the steady play of junior-to-be quarterback Matt Viles, Edison won its highly-regarded passing tournament for the second consecutive year on Saturday. The Chargers beat Valencia of Valencia in the final. I’ll have a more detailed report on ocvarsity.com later tonight. I’ll also have updates on Edison, Los Alamitos, Mater Dei, Tesoro and Orange Lutheran.

On the adjacent field, Corona Centennial defeated Mater Dei in the final consolation game of the tournament. Between to the two fields, there were at least 1,000 folks watching some great skill players, including Mater Dei quarterback Matt Barkley. And with no admission, there wasn’t a better deal in the county on Saturday.

Fryer: All-Star game, review …

Saturday, July 12th, 2008 by sfryer

North 12, South 10.

That was an exciting finish. North quarterback Chris Morales was having a miserable game, and then on that last drive he looked like Joe Montana with some cool, clutch completions. Christian Daniel made two great catches, one on the touchdown at the back of the end zone, and then made the game-clinching INT.

The PA system and PA guy are getting ribbed on the message boards here — and for good reason.

Turn the darned volume down!!! I would tell the guy who runs the stadium this, but no matter how gentlemanly I am toward him he is cranky 24/7 and has been for years. When I walked into the stadium just after 6 p.m., a rap tune was being played with the “N” word a prominent and constant part of the lyrical content. I have written this before, and here it is again — DON’T LET KIDS SELECT THE MUSIC!!! It later went to classic rock, of the dullest variety. Hey, I love the Stones and have seen them 17 times. They have more good songs than just “Satisfaction,” ya know.

I do some presentations and public speaking myself, and one thing I always do is make sure is that I will pronounce kids’ names correctly. I take the time to check with the kids, or somebody who knows them. Get it right. At the All-Star Game, El Toro’s Jai Morris’s first name was “John” and then it was pronounced “Jie” (rhymes with “die”) when it is correctly pronounced like “Jay.” A Santa Margarita player was announced to be from Santa Barbara. I know those Catholic schools don’t have attendance boundaries, but come on … the highlight, though, might have been when the PA guy made a teasing comment about a CIF-Southern Section assistant commissioner when he thought his microphone was off.

There should have been someone to tell kids to not stand along the front railing in front of the stands. There were some senior citizens sitting on the front row — it can be difficult for some of these good folks to climb stairs — and their view was blocked. Our senior citizens, these grandparents of the players, deserve whatever courtesy we can give them.

Finally, my prediction of the North winning by three points was pretty close. I thought the North linebackers would be a deciding factor, and Sean Kurtz, Brady Lukas and Kameron Jones delivered. North coach Brent McKee and South coach Jason Negro ribbed me but good for that prediction, back in May at the All-Star recognition dinner. I know what I’m doing. The Frankly Fryer record is very good. I am happy to compete against anyone at any time, when it comes to forecasting high school football game results, and happier still when I compete against someone who, like me, is willing to put his real name behind his predictions (which never happens).

O.C. All-Star Game: Instant analysis

Friday, July 11th, 2008 by OCVarsity Editor

Adam Maya filed this instant analysis after Friday’s O.C. Football All-Star Game:

Maya’s MVPs:
· El Toro running back Jai Morris: He returned a kickoff 59 yards to set up a field goal for the South. He later scored a 15-yard touchdown.

North pulls out victory in O.C. All-Star Game

COSTA MESA – This was a football game that was a lot like a 1,500-meter race – fairly boring for most of the event, then very exciting at the end.

Don’t call him Jy

Friday, July 11th, 2008 by ADAM MAYA, OCREGISTER.COM since 2006

The North starts at midfield, and ends there too. Saumur is intercepted by Blake, who makes a nice return. The South might be able to run the clock out.

Morris picks up nine yards on third and 16. The South looks to be attempting a 53-yard field goal before a timeout on the field leaves the crowd restless. I guess the South isn’t certain abouyt this field goal. Meanwhile, a rep from Morris’s camp asks us to inform the PA that Jai’s first name is pronounced Jay not Jy.

The South ends up punting and Miller kicks it to the North 3. Well done.

With little more than two minutes left, Morales completes a first down to El Dorado’s Nolan Sheldon. Morales completes another first down to Canyon’s Christian Daniel. The North is at its own 30.

WOW! Morales hits Swaney down the leftsideline for a 61-yard completion. The North is at the 9. Swaney caught it between two defenders and broke a tackle to pick up some extra yardage.

Touchdown, North. Morales scrambled to his left and completed an off balance lob to Daniel. Remember, the North had just gone 39 minutes without any points from it’s offense.

The kick is not attempted after a bad snap, but a face mask penalty by the South means we’re kicking again. Or, for the first time, I should say.

Or not. The North tries for two and fails.

Boo to booing

Friday, July 11th, 2008 by ADAM MAYA, OCREGISTER.COM since 2006

Audagnotti runs for 12 yards on first down but that is all the South gets. Don’t go to the bathroom folks, or you’ll miss a punt or two.

The North takes over and quickly moves downfield following a 38-yard pass from La Habra’s Chris Morales to Petey Puga. The North is at the South 36. Its drive stalls and the crowd begins to boo. Shame on you, guys. On a brighter note, Sewell is back in the MVP game. He just pinned the South inside the 10.

Curtis completes a third-down conversion to The Abbott.

The South then punts a few plays later.

Mid 4Q

I missed the part where it stopped being about Imus

Friday, July 11th, 2008 by ADAM MAYA, OCREGISTER.COM since 2006

The North goes three and out. I don’t know how many more punts I can take. I don’t know how many Sewell can take. He didn’t even bother going into the locker room at halftime. I think he’s mad.

The South returns the favor via Sagaiao punt. He kicks this one quite well and climbps up that MVP board. Sorry, this is the most interesting thing to talk about right now.

El Modena’s Ray Holley gains 20 yards on a screen pass. Three plays later the North is punting. Of course.

Audagnotti goes up the middle for 26 yards. See, this is why I picked the South. No team with two Carlos can lose.

And the South fumbles it away. C’mon, boys. Orange Lutheran’s Blake Hyepock throws to a hopeful Josh Swaney, who has no chance of making a play on the ball after being thrown down by Roy (er, Harold) Williams. No call.

“That’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen not called,” Fryer says. ”I’ve been to more games than Tom Landry.” He insisted that I include this because it truly was a bad call.

I feel like Bernard McGuirk right now.

The North courageously elects not to punt on fourth and 4 and turns it over on downs.
