Boys water polo poll: Who's No. 1 in Orange County?

segesjs"I'd be a great Division I," Mater Dei boys coach water polo coach Chris Segesman told me Saturday night. "I think we're all close."

Yes, what if Mater Dei was in Division I this season and part of the postseason season mix with Loyola, El Toro, Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar? That certainly would be some good water polo.

While I believe the Trinity League will move from Division II to Division I the next time the divisions are reconfigured, we still need to figure out the county rankings in wake of Mater Dei's upset of No. 1 Newport Harbor on Saturday in NorCal.

Boys water polo: Mater Dei, Newport to clash in NorCal

boys_wpolo_iconAccording to @NewportAquatics, Mater Dei's boys water polo team has defeated Coronado, 10-5, to reach the finals of the Memorial Cup in San Jose. The Monarchs, runner-ups last weekend at the North-South Challenge, play the Newport in the finals tonight at Bellarmine at 6:30.

Newport defeated Corona del Mar, 7-5, in its semifinals, accoriding to @TotalWaterpolo

Boys water polo: Back Bay rivals, Mater Dei reach semifinals in San Jose

boys_wpolo_iconOrange County water polo will have three of the four semifinalists for Saturday's Memorial Cup Invitational in San Jose.

In the first semifinal, No. 4 Mater Dei will play Coronado at 12:30 p.m. Then at 1:40 p.m., it's No. 1 Newport Harbor vs. No. 2 Corona del Mar.

The final is set for 6:30 p.m.

Boys water polo: El Toro's offense sparkles against Villa Park

boys_wpolo_iconEl Toro's No. 3 boys water polo team impressed me Thursday with its offense against visiting Villa Park.

In their 15-11 victory, the Chargers racked up 12 assists in an excellent display of unselfish water polo.

Katella 12 Valencia 4 (F) Knights avenge an earlier loss in league to Tigers and move into a first-place tie in the key Division VII league. Katella is the defending CIF-SS Division VII champion, having defeating Valencia in the finals last season.

Boys water polo: El Toro captures N-S Challenge

boys_wpolo_iconRussell Renteria scored six goals as the El Toro's No. 4 boys water polo team defeated No. 2 Mater Dei, 14-9, to become the first two-time winner of the North-South Challenge in Atherton.

Renteria, a junior, was one of six players who scored for El Toro. Goalie Garrett Danner added 15 saves for the Chargers, who led 9-3 in the third.

Newport Harbor never trails and takes the match, 10-9, at Newport Harbor. Blake Kelly's backhander with 3:35 left proves to be the difference.

Newport 9, CdM 8 (3) Bergeson has six goals , including one with 34 seconds left to make it 9-8

Update 2

Newport 7, CdM 6 (H) - Max Bergeson scored three of his four goals in the second period to help the Sea Kings made up almost all of a 7-3 deficit with 2:41 left in the second.

Boys water polo: El Toro-Mater Dei will be a trilogy

El Toro's No. 4 boys water polo team has handled Carslbad, 12-6, to reach the finals of the North-South Challenge. Chargers will meet Mater Dei for a third time this season at 5:10.
