Track and field: Britt retires from Esperanza

boys_track_icon1Esperanza boys and girls head track and field coach Al Britt has officially retired after 28 years at the school.

During his tenure, the girls team won 24 league titles, eight Orange County Championships, a CIF title in 1994 and finished CIF runner-up in 1984, 1993 and 1995.

Track and Field: Locals look to shine at 2009 World Youth T&F Trials

boys_track_icon4While the 2009 CIF track and field season is over, some of the county’s top track and field athletes have taken their acts to the national stage, as the 2009 World Youth Track and Field Trials got underway today at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
 
In the boys 110 qualifying race, Mission Viejo senior Devalle Pedrogo posted a wind-aided 13.88 to finish second in his heat and with second best time of the day.

Girls Track and Field: State Finals Breakdown (Day 2)

girls_track_icon2The 2009 track and field season reaches its conclusion tonight, as the finals of the State Track and Field Championships take place at Buchanan High.

Here now is a look at the county athletes that will be in competition for a state championship.

 

 400m

County Participants: Gabrielle Scott (Woodbridge); Christina Twicken (San Clemente)

Outlook: Scott (55.28) won her individual prelim heat and had the fifth best time of the day. A top-five finish in attainable for her in the finals. Twicken was the final qualifier, but she closed very well in prelims and could be a factor if she is close toward the end.

 
1600m

County Participants: Staci Foster (Orange Lutheran); Teeny Adams (Esperanza)

Outlook: Foster continued her exceptional season Friday, winning her prelim heat and posting the fastest time of any county runner this season. She will be in the title hunt in the finals and could easily win the race. Adams went 4:54.84 in prelims and should be in the top six with a big effort.

Girls Track and Field: State Meet Preview

girls_track_iconThe CIF State Track and Field Championships get underway today at Buchanan High in Fresno.

Qualifying starts this afternoon, with the finals scheduled for Saturday evening.

Here is an event by event breakdown of the action in the girls events. (Click here to go the Boys Track and Field: State Meet Preview.)

County Participant: None

Outlook: Defending state champion Ashton Purvis of St. Elizabeth High in Oakland enters with the best time in the state this season and is considered a favorite to capture her second straight state title. Rio Mesa sophomore and Southern Section Masters champion Valexsia Droughn of Rio Mesa will also be a strong favorite here.

200m

County Participants: None

Outlook: Purvis will again be a favorite here, entering with the top seeded time among all runners and the fastest wind legal time in the state this season (23.60) Highland junior Jessica Davis (23.68), Rancho Verde’s Tenille Stoudenmire (23.93, and Rancho Verde junior Alycia Herring (23.94) are the only other runners in the state to go wind-legal sub-24.00 this season.
