Girls Tennis: CIF-SS Division 1 finals preview

November 20th, 2011, 6:37 pm by

No. 4 University (Pacific Coast League Winner) vs. No. 3 Dana Hills (South Coast League Winner), Monday 10 a.m. at the Claremont Club in Claremont

Road to the finals: University def. JSerra 16-2; def. Tesoro 13-5; def. Thousand Oaks 11-7; def Campbell Hall11-7. Dana Hills def. Simi Valley 16-2; def. Mater Dei 16-2; def. Palm Desert 12-6; def. Peninsula 12-6.

Outlook: The top two teams in Orange County all season collide in a finals match that seemed improbable. University got through defending champion Campbell Hall after sweeping all nine doubles points. Dana Hills avenged its only loss of the season after jumping out to a 5-1 lead after one round against Peninsula. This is a classic matchup of strengths against weaknesses, with University’s outstanding doubles teams capable of winning all nine matches. When the two teams met earlier this season, Dana Hills won after sweeping all nine singles matches. The kicker here is that University’s singles play and Dana Hills’ doubles play have gotten much better. This should be a close one.

Girls Tennis: CIF-SS Divison 2 finals preview

November 20th, 2011, 6:34 pm by

No. 1 Santa Barbara (Channel winner) vs. No. 3 Newport Harbor (Sunset League winner), Monday 10:30 a.m. at the Claremont Club in Claremont.

Road to the finals: Santa Barbara def. Villa Park 17-1; def. Cypress 13-4 (rain); def. Los Alamitos 14-4; def. El Dorado 15-3. Newport Harbor def. Chaparral 18-0; def. Flintridge Prep 12-6; def. Arcadia 14-4; def. San Marino 11-7.

Outlook: Santa Barbara has left a wake of defeated Orange County teams on their way to the finals, most recently knocking out El Dorado in a fairly one-sided match. Newport Harbor continued their winning by upsetting a talented San Marino team to get back into the finals. The key for Newport Harbor, as always, will be the consistent performance from all nine starters in the lineup. With a strong singles player in Anna Radeva and three solid doubles teams in Mindy Wheeler and Megan Bathen, Robin Young and Christina Young and Holly Hovnanian and Kaitlyn Cosenza, the Sailors have more than a puncher’s chance against the top-seeded Santa Barbara team.

Girls Tennis: CIF-SS Division 3 finals preview

November 20th, 2011, 6:32 pm by

No. 4 Sage Hill (Academy League runner-up) vs. No. 2 St. Margaret’s (Academy League winner), Monday 11:30 a.m. at the Claremont Club in Claremont

Road to the finals: Sage Hill def. Yucaipa 17-1; def. San Gabriel 15-3; def. Arroyo Grande 10-8; def. West Ranch 10-5 (darkness). St. Margaret’s def. Marlborough 13-5; def. Los Osos 11-7; def. Hart 11-7; def. Malibu 13-5.

Outlook: These two teams are no strangers. They met twice during the Academy League season, with both wins going to St. Margaret’s, but Sage Hill picked up a win over the Tartans in a weekend tournament during the season. St. Margaret’s biggest advantage should be singles players Tiffany Cheng and Zoe Oedekerk, two of the top players in the county. Sage Hill will counter with a more balanced lineup that features several strong doubles teams. These two teams met in the finals last year, with St. Margaret’s winning the match in a tiebreaker. Expecting it to be just as close this year seems like the responsible thing to do.

Girls tennis: Dana Hills’ Nederlander declared ineligibile

November 8th, 2011, 7:20 pm by

Dana Hills' Taylor Nederlander / LEONARD ORTIZ, THE REGISTER

Less than a week after winning the South Coast League doubles championship, Dana Hills junior Taylor Nederlander was declared ineligible, a CIF-Southern Section spokesman confirmed Tuesday.

Nederlander, an All-County selection in 2010, transferred to Dana Hills from Laguna Beach prior to the school year and received approval to play varsity matches Oct. 20. Top-ranked Dana Hills will have to forfeit the one league match in which Nederlander played, a 14-4 win over Capistrano Valley on Oct. 25.

Nederlander and Dana Hills junior Jessica Perez defeated Dana Hills’ Margo Pletcher and Cassidy Spearman in the South Coast League finals. Both teams were set to represent the league in the CIF-SS individual championships, but Nederlander is ineligible to play.

Each league is responsible for submitting two doubles teams and two singles players to the CIF-SS individual tournament, and as of now, the SCL hasn’t reached a decision.

CIF spokesman Thom Simmons said Dana Hills investigated Nederlander’s reported residence and determined it wasn’t certain that Nederlander was residing where she said she was.
