Swim video: JSerra’s McLaughlin breaks legendary O.C. record

One of the best individual swims of the CIF Division 1 finals was turned in by JSerra’s Katie McLaughlin in the 200-yard freestyle. The sophomore broke Olympian Sippy Woodhead’s legendary 1982 O.C. and Division 1 record for Mission Viejo.

Girls water polo: Corona del Mar hires Sinclair as coach

Corona del Mar announced Friday that it has hired former Newport Harbor All-County attacker Ross Sinclair as its girls water polo coach.

Sinclair replaces Sam Bailey, who left the CIF Division 1 champions for full-time teaching and coaching positions at Beckman.

Sinclair played for Jason Lynch at Newport Harbor and went on to play at UC Santa Barbara. At UC Santa Barbara, he was a three-time captain and two-time All-American.  Sinclair also played abroad in Europe, Australia and South America.

Swim: Crean Lutheran’s Ella Eastin sets U.S. national independent record

Crean Lutheran sophomore swimmer Ella Eastin broke the U.S. national record for independent schools — or private schools — in the 200-yard individual medley Thursday night at the CIF-SS Division 3 finals in Riverside.

Eastin blazed a lifetime-best and Orange County record time of 1 minute, 55.15 seconds, which breaks the national independent high school record, according to Swimming World’s updated high school records. The previous record was a 1:56.31 set earlier this year by Kaitlyn Jones of Delaware.

The overall high school record — public or private — is a 1:53.82 set by Dagny Knutson in 2009 for public school Minot in North Dakota.

Swim flash: Crean’s Lindsey Engel smashes two O.C. records

RIVERSIDE Crean Lutheran junior Lindsey Engel has smashed two O.C. records set by former Irvine standout Courtney Cashion here at the CIF-SS Division 3 swim prelims.

Here are Engel’s times: 22.56 in the 50 free; and 49.04 in the 100 free.

“What a beast,” one coach commented after Engel’s 100, the fastest in the nation this year according to All-America applications processed by NISCA.

Finals are Thursday night at 5 p.m. at Riverside City College.
