Amy Alston and Kelsey Hummer both shot a 1-over 37 on Wednesday at El Prado as Trinity League champion Santa Margarita defeated Orange Lutheran, 201-235.
It was the fifth consecutive victory for the Eagles, who improve to 10-3 and 7-1.
In other girls golf:
Two strokes. That's all that separated No. 7 Santa Margarita and No. 8 Mater Dei in Tuesday's crucial girls golf match at Tijeras Creek, and thanks to Kelsey Hummer's 2-over 38, the Eagles edged their league rival, 206-208, and won their second consecutive Trinity League title.
Ani Gulugian is set to return to the University girls golf team this week when the Trojans wrap up the regular season with matches against Pacific Coast League rivals Irvine and Beckman.
Gulugian took some time off to compete in the prestigious AJGA PING Invitational at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla. She finished in a tie for eighth in the three-round tournament, 10 strokes behind Rachel Morris of Carlsbad.
How The Top Five Fared
1. University - Beat Laguna Hills, 202-239
2. Cypress - Beat Loara, 199-265; Beat Katella 231-302
3. Newport Harbor - Beat Esperanza, 209-237; Beat Corona del Mar 222-222 (Sailors won on 6th player); Beat Los Alamitos, 203-230
CHINO HILLS - The Santa Margarita girls golf team posted one of its lowest scores in recent history at Western Hills Country Club on Thursday, and now the Trinity League championship will be decided by a nine-hole round.
The streak goes on. Barely.
Newport Harbor won its 15th consecutive match this season, but the No. 3 Sailors had to go to their sixth player to defeat No. 9 Corona del Mar on Wednesday at Santa Ana Country Club.
Newport Harbor avenged last year's disappointing loss, beating Sunset League rival Esperanza, 209-237, on Tuesday at Black Gold. In 2008, the Aztecs defeated the Sailors, and that was the only thing that kept Newport Harbor from posting a perfect season.
SANTA ANA - She saw her Mater Dei teammates throw their hands up in the air and let out a loud scream, and immediately Sarah Kjos began to rummage through her bag for her wedge as she walked up the ninth fairway.
How the top five fared:
1. University (9-1, 6-0) - Beat Beckman, 203-225; Beat Irvine, 213-247
2. Cypress (11-0, 6-0) - Beat Esperanza, 209-227; Beat Kennedy 173-225; Beat Valencia, 207-227
It's definitely not the best way to start a round, taking a triple bogey on the first hole.
Still, Morgan Moody found a way to lead Newport Harbor on Wednesday at Santa Ana Country Club as the Sailors continued on their quest to post an undefeated season.
