January 20th, 2012, 3:53 pm by

Pete Belanto, who served as an assistant coach at Woodbridge under former head coach Eric Bangs the past three seasons, has been named interim coach at Woodbridge “until further notice,” Principal Jason Viloria said Friday afternoon.

“We look forward to cheering on the Warriors as they continue their tremendous season,” Viloria said in an email.

There was still  no word from the Irvine Unified School District on why first-year head coach Dave Yates and assistant coach Ashley Smith have not coached the team since Jan. 13.

Viloria has said he can’t comment on the reasons for Yates and Smith missing the games because it is a personnel matter.

Woodbridge, which leads the Pacific Coast League, played at Beckman tonight.
