Girls basketball: Villa Park's Brianna Salvatore commits

girls_basketball_blogVilla Park guard Brianna Salvatore committed to UC Davis, Spartans girls basketball coach Kim Cram-Torres announced Tuesday.

Salvatore is a three-time All-Century League selection. Her teammate, Nicole Ballestero, also a three-time All-Century League pick, recently committed to the University of San Diego.

San Clemente's Harberts narrows list to five colleges

girls_basketball_blogSan Clemente forward Cassie Harberts, among the nation's top recruits for the 2009-10 senior class, has narrowed her college choices to five schools: UConn, USC, Arizona State, Oklahoma and Cal.

San Clemente coach Mary Mulligan-Crapo e-mailed that the 6-foot-3 Harberts had a recruiting visit from UConn coach Geno Auriemma this past weekend, and has visits lined up this fall to those five faves.

Girls basketball: Tony Matson Memorial Tournament

girls_basketball_iconIt will be a one-day event -- like a showcase -- at Mater Dei on Jan. 18, with the name of it in honor of Matson, an outstanding coach at Orange Lutheran. Matson, 44, passed away this past spring.

An outstanding coach, sure, but those who knew Tony said he was an even better man.

Mater Dei will play Brea Olinda in the Matson event. Mater Dei-Brea Olinda was the game of the year in the regular season of 2008-09.

Girls basketball: San Clemente hosting fundraiser for American Cancer Society

Girls Basketball: Pohlen selected to World University Games

jeanette_pohlenFormer Brea Olinda superstar Jeanette Pohlen was one of 12 players selected to represent the U.S. in the 2009 World University Games from July 1-11 in Belgrade, Serbia.

Pohlen, a three-time Girls Basketball Player of the Year from 2005-07 while at Brea Olinda, averaged 10.7 points and 3.8 assists per game during her sophomore season for Stanford. She was named to the Pac-10 All-Freshmen team as a freshman and made the All-Pac-10 second team this past season.

Three Mater Dei players make U-16 women's national team (updated)

girls_basketball_blogMater Dei girls basketball players Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, Alexyz Vaioletama and Jordan Adams were selected to USA Basketball's under-16 women's national team, USA Basketball announced.

Thirty-four players participated in the trials at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., for a chance to travel to the inaugural FIBA Americas under-16 Championships.
