Former Edison player eligible for national award

Former Edison football player and current UCLA Bruin, Luke Gane, is a finalist for the 2012 Uplifting Athletes Rare Disease Champion award.

The award recognizes individuals who have made a positive impact in the rare disease community. The winner will be announced at the National Institute of Heath in Washington, D.C., on Feb. 29.

In 2008, Gane was diagnosed with aplastic anemia, a rare blood disorder. Things didn’t look good for Luke until his younger brother Jacob donated bone marrow, essentially saving Luke’s life.

Gane made a full recovery and worked his way back to the football field, where he led the Chargers to the CIF-SS Pac-5 championship game.

What’s happening with OLu football?

February 8th, 2012, 12:12 pm by

Gregg Pinick, Orange Lutheran’s executive director, indicated today that the school is in the early stages of selecting a replacement for Jim Kunau, who has been reassigned at Orange Lutheran after 19 excellent years coaching the school’s football team.

Mr. Pinick said via email: “We are in the process of collecting information now to find the right coach for Orange Lutheran.  Obviously, we want to do that as soon as possible.  We have received many inquiries.”

I asked Mr. Pinick if there was truth to reports received here that Centennial of Corona coach Matt Logan and former Orange Lutheran assistant coach Brent Vieselmeyer, now coaching in Colorado, had made visits to Orange Lutheran in recent weeks. Mr. Pinick did not address that question.

We know that longtime assistant Mike Crawford is an applicant. As an OLu alum, too, he likely could have a good shot at the position.

Fullerton College coach Tim Byrnes said today he has expressed interest but has not formally applied. Community college coaching jobs are good ones — good pay, good benefits, good retirement package, etc.

Football: Santa Margarita fires JV coach after arrest for drug possession

February 8th, 2012, 11:00 am by

A Santa Margarita junior varsity football coach arrested early Saturday morning on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance has been fired by the school.

Kevin Orton, a junior varsity football coach and assistant boys golf coach, was fired Wednesday, said Stephen Bohannon, spokesman for the Diocese of Orange.

Orton, 48, of Costa Mesa was identified by law enforcement on Feb. 4 as the driver of a 2006 Cadillac limousine stalled in the No. 2 lane on Rancho Viejo Road in San Juan Capistrano around 1 a.m., said Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. The vehicle didn’t have its emergency lights on, Amormino said.

Law enforcement noticed a white, powdery substance in a cup holder inside the car and also spotted the substance in a bag, Amormino said. A field test of the substance was positive for cocaine, Amormino said.

Orton was asked to exit the limousine and was determined to be under the influence, Amormino said.

Orton was later booked into the Intake Release Center in Santa Ana and posted bond, said Lt. Dan Dwyer of the Orange County’s Sheriff’s Department.

A little trouble at La Habra

February 7th, 2012, 11:35 am by

La Habra coach Frank Mazzotta confirmed today that three football players have been disciplined as part of a number of school-wide suspensions and expulsions of students there.

Mazzotta was not at liberty to discuss the situation in detail. But he understands that rumors can make something like this appear much worse than it truly is and so he was willing to answer a couple of questions.

“It’s not a football thing,” Mazzotta said. “A lot of other students are involved, with suspensions or what have you.”

Of course, the identities of the football players or other students will not be revealed.

Mission Viejo CB, son of former NFL star, living up to his name

February 3rd, 2012, 5:04 pm by

Anthony Pierce was between classes one afternoon when he got word that there was someone waiting to meet him at the football office. Pierce had no clue who it was. It was early January and the Mission Viejo senior was more than disappointed that he had yet to receive a single scholarship offer. He felt overlooked, and with good reason after an All-County season at cornerback.

“I look in and see Norm Chow. I was blown away,” Pierce said. “He has this demeanor about him. You automatically respect him and you want to succeed for him.”

To this day Pierce is unsure how Chow, who a couple weeks prior had taken the Hawaii job after spending 2011 as the offensive coordinator for Utah, even knew who he was. It wasn’t simply because of his father, former NFL linebacker Antonio Pierce, who starred on the Super Bowl XLII champion New York Giants.

Antonio Pierce watched as a few schools expressed interest but ultimately decided not to “pull the trigger” and offer a scholarship to his 5-9, 170-pound son. Antonio could relate. Once upon a time, he was the undersized athlete that had to play two years at Mt. San Antonio junior college before transferring to Arizona and then went undrafted out of college.

“When Norm Chow came on board, I think their coaching staff recognized what Anthony was able to do, not looking at size or weight,” Antonio said. “Just being a football player. That’s what they spoke of. They loved how competitive he was. The film doesn’t lie. The kid had an outstanding season.

“Forget the coaches, he impressed his dad. I was the one in the stands biting my nails every time he was facing these kids.”

Football recruiting: Patient Orange Lutheran cornerback signs with Cal

February 3rd, 2012, 2:51 pm by

Orange Lutheran cornerback Willie Fletcher (6-2, 185) signed with Cal on Friday, the senior said moments ago.

Fletcher’s signing ends a whirlwind week for him with the Golden Bears. He first heard from Cal on Monday. The Bears offered him around 3 p.m. on Wednesday – National Signing Day.

Fletcher had two offers on National Signing Day — Northern Colorado and Southwest Oklahoma – but remained patient that a bigger school would offer. On Friday, his patience paid off big-time.

“I feel excited,” Fletcher said. “I had contact with (Cal) a couple days before Signing Day. (Coach Jeff Tedford) said they liked my film and that I was a good player and that I had a lot to offer the program. … I told him I wasn’t signing Signing Day because me and my dad (Willie) wanted to pursue bigger scholarships.

Fletcher said it wasn’t hard to be patient.

“Me and my dad had talked about it,” he said. “He just told me to be patient and my time will come, and it came. I knew my talents and capabilities and what (college) division I should be in.”

Fletcher had a combined three interceptions in two all-star games in January.

His signing gives the Lancers an county-leading 11 seniors headed toward the college football ranks. “Since I was a kid, Division 1 has been my dream,” Fletcher said.

Football recruiting: Orange Lutheran’s signing class grows

February 2nd, 2012, 7:44 pm by

Orange Lutheran senior wide receiver Brady Roelofs (6-0, 180) has committed to University of San Diego, former Lancers football coach Jim Kunau said Thursday.

The addition of Roelofs gives Orange Lutheran a county-leading 10 players headed to the college ranks.

The Lancers’ class could rise to 11 if cornerback Willie Fletcher signs with Cal. We’re trying to update that 11th-hour situation that broke late Wednesday.

Football: La Habra’s Mazzotta to Orange Lutheran?

February 2nd, 2012, 1:38 pm by

La Habra football coach Frank Mazzotta said he is not among the 50 applicants for the Orange Lutheran football coaching position, and he won’t add an application to the stack.

“I’m not going to apply for it,” Mazzotta said. “Are they taking applications already?”

Yes, they are. Mazzotta has been wildly successful at La Habra, where the school has won multiple league and CIF championships during his tenure. He has a great situation at La Habra.
