Football: Gilliland questionable for Friday

Basketball: Mater Dei's Franklin commits

boys_basketball_iconMater Dei 6-foot-4 senior guard Gary Franklin committed today to Cal, Mater Dei coach Gary McKnight announced.

Franklin had committed last year to USC, by withdrew from that commitment after a Trojans coaching change.

Franklin averaged 14 points and 5 assists a game last year, and led Mater Dei with 63 3-pointers.

Mater Dei teammate Tyler Lamb committed to UCLA two years ago, and the Monarchs' Keala King, who transferred to Mater Dei from Dominguez of Compton, committed to Arizona State.

recruiting_iconEsperanza baseball player Jonathan Maciel, a senior infielder, has committed to Long Beach State, and his sister, Stephanie, a sophomore utility player on the softball team, has committed to Loyola Marymount.

Jonathan Maciel was the Sunset League's Rookie of the Year last season.

Football recruiting: Viles puts on show for Pac-10 coach

football_blog6Edison quarterback Matt Viles helped his recruiting stock rise with another strong outing Friday against Servite.

Coming off a school-record 457 yards last week, the senior completed 20 of 33 passes for 227 yards and one touchdown. He could have been probably 24 of 33 but Edison dropped some passes. V

iles also ran for a touchdown.

Basketball: MD's Franklin draws interest from UCLA, UConn

boys_basketball_iconMater Dei's All-County senior guard, Gary Franklin, recently had visits from UConn coach Jim Calhoun and UCLA coach Ben Howland and he will make a recruiting visit to Baylor this weekend.

Franklin had committed to USC but backed off during the coaching change at the school.

The early signing period for basketball and a bunch of other sports is in November.

Football recruiting: Cypress' Muhammad on WAC radar

muhammadHe returned two long kickoffs for touchdowns against Mater Dei last week.

He also racked up 313 all-purpose yards against the Monarchs.

How many players can say they did that in one game against Mater Dei? Not many.

Yes, Cypress running back Akeelie Muhammad (5-11, 175) showed he is a special player that county football fans best remember.

So while the surprising Centurions don't have a game this week because of a bye, Coach Ray Fenton does have some recruiting news on Muhammad.
