Girls water polo: Rosary's Rigler headed East

Rosary water polo center Katie Rigler has committed to Princeton, she said n an e-mail.

Rigler, one of the top centers in Orange County, said she picked Princeton over UCLA.

Rigler, pictured at the far left with teammate and UC Irvine-bound Hannah Croghan (right), is an emerging force and a huge get for the Tigers.

Last season, Princeton came to Orange County and landed first-team All-County attacker Brittany Zwirner of Foothill.

In other water polo recruiting news, Edison goalie Clair Babinski and Laguna Hills’ Megan Minekime signed with San Diego State for women’s water polo. Both play club for SET.

Yes, Edison's smashing middle linebacker, Jordan Zumwalt, has picked up another major offer.

So who was the team that reportedly offered to the Stanford commit?

According to a blog post by West Coast recruiting guru Greg Biggins, Zumwalt was offered by USC on Wednesday night.

This recruiting story will be interesting to watch. My question, however, at this point: What took the Trojans so long?

Zumwalt is a tough dude on the football field. He covers ground and brings plenty of power. He plays with some serious intensity, and can even do it when hurt.

Girls basketball: Magnolia player signs

Magnolia girls basketball player Desiree Hunter, a 6-foot-1 senior forward, has signed with Denver University, Sentinels coach Mike Anderson confirmed.

Rosary water polo player Hannah Croghan and Capo Valley's Katie Weirath have committed to four-year schools.

Croghan will join Edison's Danielle Warde at UC Irvine, and Weirath is headed to Long Beach State.

Girls water polo: Newport Harbor's McCall to sign with USC

Newport Harbor water polo player Colleen McCall will sign today with USC, her father, Mike, said in an e-mail.

McCall, the youngest of six siblings - all of whom have played water polo - , took up the sport the summer before her sophomore year but has quickly progressed to being a top player at powerhouse Newport Harbor.

She's certainly a player to watch this upcoming season.

Girls water polo: Laguna Beach's Ross makes it a county trio to Stanford

Laguna Beach standout water polo center Lexie Ross signed Wednesday with Stanford, giving the Cardinal another impressive trio of county recruits.

Los Alamitos' Kaley Dodson and Tesoro's Kelsey Suggs also signed with Stanford.

Last season, Stanford landed player of the year Annika Dries of Laguna Beach, first-team All-County goalie Kate Baldoni of Corona del mar and Corona del Mar center Victoria Kennedy.

Swimming: Bates signs with NCAA champions

Mater Dei swimmer Melissa Bates signed Wednesday morning with reigning NCAA champion Cal, she confirmed in a text message.

Bates is a great get for Cal. She's a versatile swimmer who continues to improve.

Water polo standouts Kaley Dodson of Los Alamitos and Kelsey Suggs of Tesoro signed Wednesday with Stanford.

I expecting to hear today that Laguna Beach's Lexie Ross also signed with Stanford. She had earlier committed to the Cardinal for women's water polo.

Dodson is arguably the county's top recruit in this girls water polo class. She played for the U.S. junior national team over the summer.

Suggs is a tremendous shooter. She earlier committed to UCLA but now is heading to NorCal.

Girls water polo: Gilchrist signs with SoCal power (updated)

Newport Harbor All-County water polo player Kaleigh Gilchrist signed with USC on Wednesday, Lady Sailors coach Bill Barnett said in an e-mail Wednesday.

This is an excellent get for the Trojans. Gilchrist is an emerging force at 2 meters who has shown a knack for clutch performances.

She also is a big-time surfer, so the senior must be happy to be staying in Southern California.

Wednesday is the first day of a one-week letter of-intent signing period for boys and girls basketball, baseball, softball and several other sports.

A letter of intent binds a student-athlete to attend a college or university for one academic year. Once a letter of intent is signed, other colleges cannot recruit the student-athlete.

Another signing period for most sports starts in April. The signing period for football, soccer, cross country, men's water polo and track and field begins in February.
