Tuesday’s games

February 16th, 2013, 2:12 pm by

When the CIF-Southern Section playoffs continue Tuesday, four games will include Orange County teams playing against each other. Two of those games are quarterfinals.

In a Division 3AAA quarterfinal, Servite plays at Brea Olinda. Northwood plays at Ocean View in a 3A quarterfinal.

In second-round games, Mission Viejo is at Orange Lutheran in 1AA, and Dana Hills is at Troy in 1A.

When two teams meet after the first round of the playoffs, the team with the fewest number of playoff home games at that point of the playoffs is the home team. If the two teams have had the same number of playoff home games, a coin flip determines the home team.

Lists of county teams that won and lost those coin flips …

FLIP WINNERS
Edison 1A
Villa Park 2AA
Tesoro 2A
Godinez 2A
Brea 3AAA
Corona del mar 3AA

Second-round coin flip results

February 13th, 2013, 1:52 pm by

When two teams meet after the first round of the playoffs, the team with the fewest number of playoff home games at that point of the playoffs is the home team. If the two teams have played the same number of playoff home games, a coin flip determines the home team.

The CIF-Southern Section does those home-team deciding coin flips in advance. The results of them for the second round are here.

Girls soccer: Godinez forfeits 10 matches for CIF rules violation

February 7th, 2013, 2:05 pm by

The CIF-SS office confirmed Thursday that the Godinez girls’ soccer team will forfeit 10 matches this season because of a player that played in those matches violated CIF Bluebook Rule 600 that states a player cannot participate on an outside team during the high school soccer season.

The Grizzlies will forfeit three nonleague matches (a 4-0 win over Century, a 3-1 win over Katella, and a 3-3  tie with University.)

Seven of the forfeited matches were Orange Coast League contests. Those matches are: a 4-1 win over Calvary Chapel, two 4-0 wins over Costa Mesa, a 1-1 tie with Estancia, a 1-0 win over Laguna Beach, a 2-1 win over Saddleback, and a 0-0 tie with Calvary Chapel.

Public vs. private — the commissioner weighs in

December 6th, 2012, 10:29 am by

CIF-Southern Section commissioner Rob Wigod’s “A Message from the Commissioner” that appears periodically at the section website, cifss.org, this time is about the relationships of private schools and public schools within CIF-SS athletics.

It’s a good read. You can access it here.

Ironic twist to the Tesoro selection

November 4th, 2012, 8:56 am by

The CIF-Southern Section’s Football Coaches Advisory Committee ranked the leagues in the Pac-5 Division, as to does in all 13 11-man playoff divisions.

It had the South Coast ranked ahead of the Serra League, and that ranking played a part in Tesoro’s selection over Crespi for one of the Pac-5′s two at-large berths.

Brian Barnes was one of the 45 coaches on the advisory committee. It became a 44-coach committee when Barnes was removed last week as Tesoro’s coach. So the sans-Barnes committee’s ranking of the the leagues helped Tesoro get the at-large berth.

Tesoro at-large team, and …

CIF-Southern Section football at-large teams in divisions that have Orange County teams:

Pac-5 Division — Tesoro and Bishop Amat

Southwest Division — Esperanza and Los Alamitos

Southern Division — Beckman

Beckman — at-large team in Southern Division?

November 3rd, 2012, 2:29 pm by

Beckman is the No. 4 team in the Pacific Coast League. The Patriots and Irvine both have 2-3 league records, but because Beckman beat Irvine, Beckman is the league’s No. 4 playoff representative in the Southern Division.

The league’s order of representation for the playoffs: 1. Corona del Mar, 2. Northwood, 3. Woodbridge, 4. Beckman.

As the Pacific Coast League is the best league in the Southern Division, Beckman has a very good chance of getting the division’s one at-large berth when at-large teams are named Sunday at 8 a.m.
