Boys basketball: Friday’s schedule

Here is the schedule for Friday’s CIF-Southern Section playoffs, for games involving Orange County teams …

All games 7 p.m.

Semifinals

Division 3AAA — Tustin (28-2) at Compton (20-9); Brea Olinda (22-7) at Royal of Simi Valley (22-7).

Division 3AA — Leuzinger of Lawndale (22-7) at Santa Margarita (15-14); Damien of La Verne (23-6) at Corona del Mar (21-9).

Division 3A — Ocean View (23-6) at St. John Bosco of Bellflower (22-6).

Quarterfinals

Division 1AA — Rancho Verde of Moreno Valley (23-5) at Mater Dei (28-1); Mission Viejo (26-3) at Inglewood (17-9).

Division 1A — El Toro (25-5) at Santiago of Corona (20-9); West Ranch of Valencia (21-6) at Dana Hills (22-7); Santa Monica (22-6) at Aliso Niguel (21-9).

Division 2AA — Villa Park (22-6) at Murrieta Valley of Murrieta (21-7).

Division 2A — Canyon (19-7) at Arroyo Grande (20-9); Dos Pueblos of Goleta (17-9) at Tesoro (20-9).

When two teams meet after the first round of the playoffs, the team with the fewest number of home games at that point of the playoffs is the home team. If the two teams have had the same number of home playoff games, a coin flip decides the home team.

Girls basketball: Mater Dei’s game tonight postponed

Mater Dei’s girls basketball Div. 1AA second round playoff game at Silverado of Victorville has been postponed to Thursday. Low snow levels and icy road conditions in the Victorville area and along the  travel route prompted the postponement.

The game will be played Thursday at 7 p.m., at Silvarado.

Tuesday’s games

When the CIF-Southern Section playoffs continue Tuesday, four games will include Orange County teams playing against each other. Two of those games are quarterfinals.

In a Division 3AAA quarterfinal, Servite plays at Brea Olinda. Northwood plays at Ocean View in a 3A quarterfinal.

In second-round games, Mission Viejo is at Orange Lutheran in 1AA, and Dana Hills is at Troy in 1A.

When two teams meet after the first round of the playoffs, the team with the fewest number of playoff home games at that point of the playoffs is the home team. If the two teams have had the same number of playoff home games, a coin flip determines the home team.

Second-round coin flip results

When two teams meet after the first round of the playoffs, the team with the fewest number of playoff home games at that point of the playoffs is the home team. If the two teams have played the same number of playoff home games, a coin flip determines the home team.

The CIF-Southern Section does those home-team deciding coin flips in advance. The results of them for the second round are here.

Costa Mesa: This will be a very brief appearance in the postseason for the Mustangs because they will be facing top-seeded Windward of L.A., which features USC-bound point guard Courtney Jaco, junior guard Jordin Canada and junior center Kristen Simon.

Estancia: The ninth-seeded Eagles got a bye in the first round and they will probably face eighth-seeded Burroughs of Ridgecrest in the second round. That will be a tough one for Estancia, but at least they will be playing in theor own gym.

Corona del Mar: The Sea Kings, an at-large team from the Pacific Coast League, will be underdogs at 14th-seeded Hawthorne in the first round.

Esperanza: The Aztecs, an at-large team from the Century League, is a big underdog at third-seeded Jurupa Valley in the first round.

COUNTY OUTLOOK

(Division 3AAA girls basketball playoff bracket)

El Dorado: The Hawks picked up the No. 3 seed after finishing third in the Century League, which is arguably the toughest league in the county. El Dorado has a very young team, but they are talented. Sophomore forward Jaylin Jones and sophomore guard Brooke Salas lead the Hawks.

Fullerton: The Indians, an at-large team from the Freeway League, will be underdogs at 13th-seeded Mayfair of Lakewood in the first round. If senior guard Nicole Beaudoin is able to help Fullerton upset Mayfair, the Indians will be even bigger underdogs against No. 4 seed Culver City.

Beckman: The Patriots won four of their final five regular season games to claim second place in the Pacific Coast League. The 15th-seeded Patriots will be favored against Whittier in the first round, but they will be underdogs against second-seeded Cajon of San Bernardino in the second round.

Anaheim: The Colonists, the third-place team from the Orange League, are big underdogs at 10th-seeded Buena of Ventura in the first round and they have one of the longest road trips of any team in the county.

Aliso Niguel: The Wolverines, an at-large team from the South Coast League, will be underdogs on the road against 13th-seeded El Rancho of Pico Rivera and they would be even bigger underogs in the second round against fourth-seeded Newbury Park.

Girls basketball: Division 1AA county outlook, players to watch

COUNTY OUTLOOK

 (Division 1AA girls basketball playoff bracket)

Brea Olinda: The 13th-seeded Ladycats hopes took a big hit when star point guard Anna Kim fractured her ankle a week ago. Without Kim in the lineup, the Ladycats closed out the regular season with back-to-back losses to Foothill and El Dorado and finished tied for first in the Century League with Foothill. The Ladycats will rely heavily on junior guard Arin Perry and senior forward Tori Bryant. Brea Olinda could end up playing fourth-seeded Long Beach Poly in the second round, so a deep playoff run seems unlikely this season.
