Quick look at Friday

We still are gathering results, but here is what we know so far for Friday’s schedule …

1AA Quarterfinals  — Mater Dei at Foothill. Foothill has a medium-sized gym .. but will this be moved to a larger gym? Maybe Canyon’s?

1A Quarterfinals — Mission Viejo at West Ranch of ; El Toro vs. Warren-Crescenta Valley winner; Corona at Orange Lutheran; Capistrano Valley vs. Vista Murrieta-Chino Hills winner.

2AA Quarterfinals — Sunny Hills vs. JW North-Temecula Valley winner; Tesoro at Royal of Simi Valley.

3AA Semifinals — Yorba Linda vs. La Canada-South Torrance winner.

3A Semifinals — Santa Margarita at Alemany of Mission Hills.

Date and time — Friday, 7 p.m. — unchanged.

Orangewood Academy. The Spartans (15-11) have been in the division rankings all season and played a challenging schedule.

Boys Division 6 Breakdown

SEEDED TEAMS

1. Renaissance Academy. The Wildcats (19-6), who finished third in the Harbor League, don’t have much momentum, with a three-game losing streak, but are considered the class of the division.

2. Hesperia Christian. The Patriots (20-6) went undefeated in the Agape League.

3. California Lutheran. The C-Hawks (15-3), who went 12-0 in the Arrowhead League, take a 12-game winning streak into the playoffs.

4. Los Angeles Adventist. The Eagles (13-8) finished second in the Mulholland League.

AT-LARGE TEAMS

Orangewood Academy (San Joaquin League); Mesa Grande (Victory).

DARKHORSE: Orangewood Academy. The Spartans (15-11) finished fourth in a good small-schools basketball league, the San Joaquin League.

BEST FIRST-ROUND GAME

Eastside Christian at North County Christian. Good games often come from matchups of third-place teams, and that’s we have here as the Eagles travel to Atascadero.

Capistrano Valley Christian. The Eagles (20-6), the only county team in this division, have the scoring versatility to make a run in this division.

Boys basketball: Division 5AA county outlook, players to watch

COUNTY OUTLOOK

Saddleback Valley Christian: The Warriors, with former Mater Dei great and JSerra coach Tom Lewis at the helm, went 10-0 in the San Joaquin League and have won eight in a row.

Brethren Christian: The Warriors, led by 7-5 junior Mamadou Ndiaye, were 10-0 in the Academy League and have an 11-game winning streak.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Mamadou Ndiaye, Brethren Christian, 7-5, Jr., C, 23 ppg

Billy Bryson, Brethren Christian, 5-11, Sr., G, 11 ppg

Alpha Ndaw, 6-7, Jr., C, 18 ppg

Boys basketball: Division 5AA breakdown

SEEDED TEAMS

1. St. Bernard. The Vikings (19-7), long a force in Southern California basketball, went 10-0 in the Camino Real League and take a 13-game winning streak in ot the playoffs.

2. Village Christian. The Olympic League champion Crusaders (24-2) are averaging 68 points a game.

3. Ribet Academy: The Fighting Frogs (15-9) finished second in the tough Harbor League.

4. Mission Prep: The Royals (21-5) lost by one point to Servite earlier this month.

AT-LARGE TEAMS

Vistamar (Coastal League); Santa Clara (Tri-Valley); Arrowhead Christian (Ambassador); Yeshiva (Liberty); Bellarmine-Jefferson (Santa Fe).

DARKHORSE: Brethren Christian. If the rest of the division does not know about him yet, the other teams might have to reckon with Warriors’ 7-foot-5 junior Mamadou Ndiaye soon enough.

BEST FIRST-ROUND GAME

Animo Leadership at Brethren Christian. Animo (14-5) played some good competition in the Harbor League, which could have them ready to go against the Warriors (22-5).

Fairmont Prep: The Huskies (22-4) kept winning, and finished second in the San Joaquin League, after Clay McKnight abruptly vacated his coaching position at mid-season.

Girls Basketball: Division 6 county outlook, players to watch

COUNTY OUTLOOK
Orangewood Academy – The Express League champion won each of its league games by at least 17 points. The Spartans (21-4) haven’t lost since Dec. 17 and have held two opponents under 10 points.
Eastside Christian – No team in the Express League played Orangewood Academy tougher than the Eagles (11-11). They have the defense to make a run.
Bethel Baptist – The Warriors (14-6) are playing their best basketball of the season, having won 14 of 16.
Liberty Christian – The Minutemen (10-14) have lost five games by three points or less but finished the season with a few big victories.

Girls Basketball: Division 6 Breakdown

SEEDED TEAMS
1. Orangewood Academy – The bracket’s top seed has won 14 games in a row and outscored opponents by about 14 points. After opening the season with three consecutive losses, the Spartans (21-4) have won 21 of 22. They’re led by junior guard Jareni Nunez, who is averaging 12.6 points a game.
2. Providence Hall – The Lions (12-6) knocked off a number of teams ranked in higher divisions. They’ve lost just once in the new year and have the potential to score a lot of points.
3. Valley Christian/SM – The Lions (14-1) are a bit untested having played nearly all of their games against league opponents. They went 12-0 to win the Coast Valley League are led by senior guard Una Hertzog, who is averaging 17.1 points a game.
4. Hesperia Christian – The Patriots (14-10) went 8-0 to win the Agape League, rallying from a 1-6 start to the season. They have a balanced scoring attack, led by senior guard Lyza McRae (10.9 ppg).
