Water polo recruiting: Santa Margarita’s Wan exploring schools on both coasts

Santa Margarita water polo player Haley Wan, The Register’s 2013 player of the year, is now swimming fast for the Eagles’ girls swim team but she has also been keeping up with college recruiting.

The junior attended a Cal junior day in March and visited Harvard and Princeton over spring break.

She also made an unofficial visit to UCLA in April and planned to visit Stanford.

“It’s really exciting but it’s really stressful, too,” Wan said during the recent Foothill Swim Games.

Swim: Garden Grove’s Toth selected league athlete of the year

Garden Grove swimmer/water polo player Ben Toth has been selected Garden Grove League male athlete of the year, the senior confirmed.

Toth was a second-team all-league pick in boys water polo and is the league’s reigning MVP in swimming. During league prelims on Tuesday, he qualified first in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke in automatic Division 4 qualifying times. He also has clocked an auto time in the backstroke.

Toth carries a 3.87 grade-point average and is water safety instructor at Gary Hall Pool. He will attend UC Irvine next year.

Girls water polo: Ex-Los Alamitos standout Fattal rallies UCLA at MPSF

College water polo highlights from Friday:

Freshman Rachel Fattal (Los Alamitos) — a two-time Register player of the year — scored twice in the fourth period, including the game-winner with 2:07 left, to rally UCLA women’s water polo team past host Cal, 4-3, in a key first round game at the MPSF championships Friday.

Not surprisingly, Fattal is having a super-season for UCLA. She was a heck of a complete player for the Griffins, and now, UCLA.

In another game, Kaleigh Gilchrist (Newport Harbor) scored five goals to help USC defeat Cal State Bakersfield, 21-5.

At the Big West tournament, host UC Irvine opened with an 8-5 victory against UC Davis.

Boys water polo: Mater Dei’s Segesman captures state coaching award

Mater Dei’s Chris Segesman has been selected the California Coaches Association’s boys water polo coach of the year.

Segesman, pictured coaching the girls this past season, will be honored at the CCA’s award banquet June 15 in Fresno.

In November, he guided the Monarchs’ bops to their second consecutive undefeated season in Division 1.

Mater Dei has claimed five consecutive Southern Section titles overall, including three in Division 1.

Troy’s Jason Wilson has been selected the CCA’s girls coach of the year.

Both Wilson and Segesman, interestingly, have ties to Sonora.

Water polo: Rosary’s Johnson commits to CWPA school

Rosary water polo defender and captain Maddy Johnson has committed to George Washington of the College Water Polo Association’s Southern-East division, Royals coach Rory Bevins reports.

Johnson played varsity four seasons at Rosary and was a first-team All-Trinity League pick this past season.

This past season, she also racked up a team-high 49 goals, 44 assists and and a team-high 69 steals.

Aquatics: Capistrano Valley’s DeShon, Beck make commitments

Capistrano Valley swimmer Spencer DeShon and swimmer/water polo player Jon Beck have made college decisions.

DeShon has committed to  Stanford from the Pac-12 while Beck has committed to Loyola Marymount for water polo. LMU competes in the Western Water Polo Association.

At Stanford, DeShon will join fellow Capistrano Valley senior, Jack DesCombes, who also will swim for the Cardinal.

Beck’s sister, Mackenzie, is one of the top scorers on LMU’s women’s water polo team.

DeShon, Beck and DesCombes are key members of the Cougars’ reigning CIF Division 1 championship swim team.

Capistrano Valley’s boys swim competes the Palm Springs invite on Saturday.

Girls water polo: Newport’s McCall, Mater Dei’s Silvers honored at USC

Former Orange County water polo standouts Nina McCall (Newport Harbor) and Chelsea Silvers (Mater Dei) were honored by USC’s women’s water polo program during a Senior Day ceremony before the Trojans played host to Stanford on Saturday.

No. 2 Stanford handed No. 1 USC its first loss, 6-4, but Senior Day felt special for McCall, pictured middle with Silvers, left.

“It’s almost like another birthday — Senior Day,” she said afterward. “It’s cool being able to say that you’ve been on a collegiate, Division 1 team for four years, and you’re being honored for it, and people recognize it. It’s a big accomplishment.”

McCall helped USC’s second unit provide a spark against the Cardinal on Saturday. She has 50 career goals. Silvers has 42 career goals.

Boys water polo: Los Alamitos standout commits to Cal

Los Alamitos water polo defender Max Merrill has committed to Cal, ex-Griffins’ boys coach Dave Carlson reports.

Merrill was a second-team All-County pick in the fall as a senior.

He will join Los Alamitos teammate Chandler Jarrels at Cal.

Boys water polo: Laguna Beach announces its college-bound seniors

Laguna Beach boys water polo coach Ethan Damato has announced the Breakers’ class of college-bound seniors.

Here’s the list of committed players who helped Laguna Beach reach the CIF Division 2 semifinals this past season:

Riley Thomas, committed to Air Force (Second-team All-County)

Camron Hauer, committed to Cal Lutheran

Maxx McCarter, GK, committed to Cal

Caleb Scott, committed to Pepperdine

Duncan Lynde, committed to Long Beach State.

“I’m happy to report that all five are committed and playing water polo next fall,” Damato said in an e-mail.

Water polo: Ex-JSerra coach offering clinics with European style

Former JSerra boys water polo coach Petar Asic is offering his European Water Polo Academy clinics on Saturday and Sundays at Dana Hills.

Asic now runs Orange County Water Polo Club and coaches the junior and senior men’s national teams for Ecuador.

Girls water polo: Application deadline set for Corona del Mar opening

Six-time CIF-SS champion Corona del Mar is accepting applications for its vacant girls water polo coaching position, which will be a walk-on post.

Coaches can send a letter of interest, resume and three letters of recommendation to athletic director Don Grable at dgrable@nmusd.us by April 23 at 3 p.m.

The Sea Queens claimed Division 1 this past season for the sixth CIF title in their history.

Coach Sam Bailey, The Register coach of the year, resigned after the season to accept a teaching and coaching positions at Beckman.

Girls water polo: Rosary utility commits to Marist

Rosary water polo player Emma Tice has committed to Marist in New York, Royals coach Rory Bevins announced.

Tice racked up 45 assists and 40 steals last season for Rosary.

She is the daughter of Rosary softball coach, Tom Tice, and serves as ASB president.
