Water polo recruiting: El Toro’s Danner to pick from three

January 28th, 2012, 9:18 pm by

All-County water polo goalie Garrett Danner of El Toro said in a text message Saturday night that his college decision will come down to USC, UCLA and Cal.

Danner returned Saturday from a recruiting trip to Cal. He said he met last week with UCLA.

It will be intriguing to see what school Danner picks because with his quickness in the cage, he will be a factor in collegiate water polo. Former El Toro coach Don Stoll called Danner the best goalie he ever coached.

Water polo recruiting: Mater Dei’s Bonanni visiting UCLA this weekend

January 27th, 2012, 8:24 pm by

Mater Dei water polo player Bret Bonanni, The Register’s two-time player of the year, is on a recruiting trip this weekend to UCLA, Monarchs coach Chris Segesman said Friday night.

Bonanni visited Stanford earlier this month. UCLA and Stanford are considered to be the finalists to land arguably the best high school player in the nation and one of the top recruits to come out of Orange County.

“He seems pretty comfortable,” Segesman said of Bonanni’s mood toward recruiting.

Bonanni’s father said Friday night that his son expects to announce his decision on National Signing Day on Wednesday. Mater Dei is hosting a signing day ceremony on Wednesday morning.

So, which school will Bonanni chose? Will be follow the footsteps of Olympian Tony Azevedo — a player he has been compared to — and head to The Farm to play for former Corona del Mar coach John Vargas or join a few of his former Mater Dei teammates and Southern California buds and pick UCLA?

Water polo recruiting: Mater Dei’s Daboub headed to Westwood

January 15th, 2012, 5:51 pm by

Mater Dei water polo defender Anthony Daboub, one of the top 2-meter defenders in the nation, has committed to UCLA, Monarchs coach Chris Segesman said a text message Sunday night.

Daboub, a second-team All-County and first-team All-CIF Division 1 pick, will join former Mater Dei standouts Alex and Zach Wherry at UCLA.

Daboub’s commitment to UCLA could fuel speculation that two-time Register player of the year Bret Bonanni of Mater Dei also will pick the Bruins. But Daboub is a huge get for the Bruins in his own right. Segesman, an assistant coach with the U.S. junior team last summer, considers Daboub the top 2-meter defender in high school water polo.

Daboub also scored 63 goals in 2011 for the Monarchs, who claimed a second straight Division 1 title by going undefeated.
