Boys water polo: SoCal regional tournament cancelled

A USA Water Polo-sanctioned Southern California regional boys water polo tournament planned for this weekend in Irvine has been canceled because of lack of an expansive field, tournament co-director Scott Mitchell said Monday morning.

Mitchell said Southern Section Division I champion El Toro along with San Diego Division I champion Carlsbad and San Diego powerhouses The Bishop's of La Jolla and Coronado declined to participate in the first-year event. Mitchell said he had not heard a response from San Diego Division II champion Cathedral Catholic.

The tournament had received commitment from several strong Southern Section teams, including Division I runner-up Newport Harbor, Division I semifinalists Loyola and Corona del Mar, Division II champion Mater Dei and Division II runner-up JSerra.

"We weren't looking to do another Masters," said Mitchell, referring to the former Southern Section tournament. "We were trying to do a much-more wide-ranging event."

Mitchell said plans for a regional tournament for the girls season in March will continue, as will plans for a state tournament.

Boys water polo: Release of SoCal tourney schedule delayed

The release of the schedule for a USA Water Polo-sanctioned Southern California regional high school boys tournament this coming weekend in Irvine has been delayed, organizer Scott Mitchell said in an e-mail Sunday night.

Mitchell said some teams are deciding whether to participate in the first-time event. He said teams will have to Monday to declare. Stay tuned for more details.
