Girls water polo: Gilchrist, Fattal earn first-team all-tourney honors at NCAAs

USC’s Kaleigh Gilchrist (Newport Harbor) and Rachel Fattal (Los Alamitos) each earned first-team all-tournament honors at the recent NCAA women’s water polo championships.

Gilchrist and Fattal also were among the 27 players invited to a U.S. training camp this weekend.

Here are the all-tournament teams, which includes a trio of former county players on second team:

Water polo recruiting: Troy goalie commits to CWPA school

Troy senior water polo goalie Danny Schneider has committed to Gannon University in Erie, Pa. of the College Water Polo Association, his father, Doug, reports.

Schneider earned Gannon’s Scholar Award and the Schuster Patron of the Arts scholarship. He is planning to major in biomedical engineering with a minor in biology.

Schneider plays club for FLO.

Boys water polo: Northwood’s Simmons commits to Rams

Northwood water polo player RJ Simmons has committed to Fordham, his father, Rick, confirmed.

The senior has been a captain for the Timberwolves in swimming and water polo the past two seasons.

In 2012, Simmons was a first-team All-Pacific Coast League selection in water polo. He netted 75 goals and racked up 43 steals.

Girls water polo: Huntington Beach’s Anderson resigns

Huntington Beach girls water polo coach Brian Anderson has resigned after four seasons, he confirmed.

Anderson said he will continue to coach Huntington Beach’s boys water polo team, a potential top-10 squad in the county come the fall.

“I just got tired,” he said over the weekend. “It’s time to take the winter time to myself.”

Girls water polo: Corona del Mar hires Sinclair as coach

Corona del Mar announced Friday that it has hired former Newport Harbor All-County attacker Ross Sinclair as its girls water polo coach.

Sinclair replaces Sam Bailey, who left the CIF Division 1 champions for full-time teaching and coaching positions at Beckman.

Sinclair played for Jason Lynch at Newport Harbor and went on to play at UC Santa Barbara. At UC Santa Barbara, he was a three-time captain and two-time All-American.  Sinclair also played abroad in Europe, Australia and South America.

Swim: Crean Lutheran’s Ella Eastin sets U.S. national independent record

Crean Lutheran sophomore swimmer Ella Eastin broke the U.S. national record for independent schools — or private schools — in the 200-yard individual medley Thursday night at the CIF-SS Division 3 finals in Riverside.

Eastin blazed a lifetime-best and Orange County record time of 1 minute, 55.15 seconds, which breaks the national independent high school record, according to Swimming World’s updated high school records. The previous record was a 1:56.31 set earlier this year by Kaitlyn Jones of Delaware.

The overall high school record — public or private — is a 1:53.82 set by Dagny Knutson in 2009 for public school Minot in North Dakota.

Swim: JSerra’s McLaughlin sets county record in the fly, Albertoli challenges 50

JSerra’s Katie McLaughlin broke the still-drying Orange County record in the 100-yard butterfly with a blast of speed Friday.

The sophomore out of the Mission Viejo Nadadores’ club won the Trinity League title at JSerra with a time of 53.27 seconds, sinking the county record of Ella Eastin of Crean Lutheran earlier this season.

Eastin, also a sophomore, clocked a 53.53 at the Foothill Swim Games to slice the 2007 county record of Tara Thomas of Beckman by one one-hundredth of a second.

JSerra sophomore Kaitlyn Albertoli challenged the county record in 50 freestyle by blasting a 22.91, just 16 one-hundredth of a second off Courtney Cashion’s 2004 standard of 22.75 for Irvine.

Swim flash: University’s Okubo smashes legendary county record!

IRVINE University junior Corey Okubo has smashed the oldest Orange County boys swimming record with an impressive performance at the Pacific Coast League finals at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center.

Okubo, a club swimmer with Aquazot, won the 200-yard individual medley in a lifetime-best 1 minute, 48.02 seconds to break the Darren Ward’s 1987 record of 1:48.83 for Sonora.

He is the second county swimmer to break an OC record this season. Ella Eastin of Crean Lutheran broke the record in the 100 fly with a 53.53.

Water polo recruiting: Santa Margarita’s Wan exploring schools on both coasts

Santa Margarita water polo player Haley Wan, The Register’s 2013 player of the year, is now swimming fast for the Eagles’ girls swim team but she has also been keeping up with college recruiting.

The junior attended a Cal junior day in March and visited Harvard and Princeton over spring break.

She also made an unofficial visit to UCLA in April and planned to visit Stanford.

“It’s really exciting but it’s really stressful, too,” Wan said during the recent Foothill Swim Games.

Swim: Garden Grove’s Toth selected league athlete of the year

Garden Grove swimmer/water polo player Ben Toth has been selected Garden Grove League male athlete of the year, the senior confirmed.

Toth was a second-team all-league pick in boys water polo and is the league’s reigning MVP in swimming. During league prelims on Tuesday, he qualified first in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke in automatic Division 4 qualifying times. He also has clocked an auto time in the backstroke.

Toth carries a 3.87 grade-point average and is water safety instructor at Gary Hall Pool. He will attend UC Irvine next year.
